Peter King, R-N.Y.; ABC News political analyst and special correspondent Matthew Dowd; ABC News senior Washington correspondent Jeff Zeleny; and editor and publisher of The Nation Katrina vanden Heuvel. Our special religion and politics roundtable included writer and religious scholar Reza Aslan; Rev. Calvin Butts, Pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York; author and atheist Susan Jacoby; Dr. Richard Land, of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission; and Sojourners president Rev. Jim Wallis, author of "On God's Side."

abc peter king this week jt 130331 wblog Rep. Peter King Compares North Korean Government to Organized Crime Family

King describes North Korean government as 'organized crime family'

KING: As far as I see, this is not even government. It's more like an organized crime family running a territory. They are brutal, he is brutal, his father was brutal, his grandfather was brutal. I don't see any purpose at all in [direct talks with North Korea] at all. It would demoralize our allies in Asia, certainly in South Korea, and it would - to me - serve no constructive purpose whatsoever.

Vanden Heuvel on gay marriage: 'justice delayed is justice denied'

VANDEN HEUVEL: "Justice delayed is justice denied. But I think that the Supreme Court is lagging so far behind now that marriage equality has won in this country? It is moving in states, it is moving politically. And I think you've seen, perhaps, the most rapid mass evolution on an issue, among our politicos as well. They know where the future of this country is. It is also a qualifier to win a next generation."

So I think whatever happens in the court, and it may well be that Kennedy's - Justice Kennedy's consuming affection for state rights does lead to overruling DOMA, I think we are going to see a social, moral, and political paradigm shift that is extraordinary.

King supports President Obama's position on guns

KING: Let me say, I support the president's position on guns. So I'll say that. Having said that, it's going to be very difficult to get very meaningful legislation through the congress, because despite what [Mayor Booker] was saying? is that you get a majority of Americans who don't seem to want this type of legislation. And I support it. So I'm - I am again, supporting legislation on gun trafficking, on background checks, assault weapons, all of that. But I just don't see the intensity building up.

Vanden Heuvel states 'the Republican Party is a values challenged party'

VANDEN HEUVEL: If they don't go along with immigration. I mean, as you head into 2014, the Republican Party is a values challenged party. They have big problems on immigration, on same-sex marriage, on gun reform, commonsense gun reform. So I think this is going to be a test case

Land thinks immigration reform 'needs to be done'

LAND: "Immigration reform is tearing the social fabric of the country. It needs to be done. The lack of doing it is causing havoc that will be difficult to repair in the social fabric of the country. And there is a way to do it, and a way to do it that's fair, and a way to do it that will heal the country."

7 States Running Out Of Water: 24/7 Wall St.

From 24/7 Wall St.: The United States is in the midst of one of the biggest droughts in recent memory. At last count, over half of the lower 48 states had abnormally dry conditions and are suffering from at least moderate drought.

More than 80 percent of seven states were as of last week in ?severe drought,? characterized by crop or pasture loss, water shortage and water restrictions. Depending on whether the hardest-hit regions see significant precipitation, crops yields could fall and drought conditions could persist for months to come. Based on the latest data provided by the U.S. Drought Monitor, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the seven states running out of water.

Click here to see the seven states running out of water

U.S. Department of Agriculture meteorologist and Drought Monitor team member, Brad Rippey, explained that when the drought began in 2012, the worst of the conditions were much farther east, in states like Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan ? the corn belt states. Based on pre-drought estimates, corn used for grain lost slightly more than a quarter of its potential. By the Summer of 2012, 59 percent of U.S. rangeland and pastureland was rated by the USDA as being in poor or very poor condition. The growing drought decimated national hay production, causing feed shortages, which in turn drove up prices in livestock.

By the fall of 2012, drought conditions continued to expand westward to its current epicenter ? states like Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado and Oklahoma. Rippey explained that most worrying is the drought?s effects on the winter wheat crop, which is one of the biggest crops grown in the U.S., and which is grown almost entirely in the states in severe drought. While the region has had some precipitation recently, ?winter wheat crop will need ideal conditions heading through the next few weeks just to break even. We?re still trending towards a very poor hard red winter wheat crop at this point,? Rippey said.

In addition to severe drought conditions, relatively large areas in the worst-off states are in ?exceptional? drought, which the USDA identifies as ?exceptional and widespread crop/pasture losses, shortages of water in reservoirs, streams, and wells creating water emergencies.? More than 70 percent of Nebraska is currently classified as being in a state of ?exceptional drought,? which includes Exceptional and widespread crop/pasture losses; shortages of water in reservoirs, streams, and wells creating water emergencies.

The last time the U.S. saw a drought close to this level of severity was in the 1980s, Rippey explained. But even compared to that drought, the current conditions may be worse. ?You really need to go back to the 1950s to find a drought that lasted and occupied at least as much territory,? Rippey said.

The U.S. Drought Monitor, is produced by the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the seven states that had at least 80 percent of the total area classified in at least a state of severe drought as of March 14th. We also reviewed agricultural statistics, such as crop yields, in these states, using data collected from USDA state agricultural overviews. Most of these data are for 2011.

Here are seven states running out of water, according to 24/7 Wall St.:

  • 7. Oklahoma

<strong>Percent of state in severe drought:</strong> 83.2% <strong>Percent of state in extreme drought:</strong> 56.7% (4th highest) <strong>Percent of state in exceptional drought:</strong> 9.7% (6th highest) Over half the area of Oklahoma currently suffers from extreme drought ? the second worst level listed on the U.S. Drought Monitor. Oklahoma shares this distinction with just four other states. Drought conditions have actually improved since the start of the year. The percentage of the state facing exceptional drought ? the worst category of drought ? has fallen from 37% at the start of the year to less than 10% currently. In January, the USDA declared a large part of the winter wheat belt, spanning from Texas to North Dakota, as a disaster area due to the lack of moisture. According to the Scottsbluff Star-Herald, recent precipitation has not been enough to help the winter wheat crop in the state that had to be planted in dry soil. <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/21/the-seven-states-running-out-of-water/#ixzz2P2lNh39V" target="_blank">Read more at 24/7 Wall St. </a>

  • 6. Wyoming

<strong>Percent of state in severe drought:</strong> 83.7% <strong>Percent of state in extreme drought:</strong> 54.7% (5th highest) <strong>Percent of state in exceptional drought:</strong> 10.1% (5th highest) Wyoming is one of the driest states in the country, a condition not likely to improve in the near future. According to the National Weather Service, the drought is expected to persist or worsen in most of the state over the next few months. The most critical drought problems are taking place in the eastern portion of the state. In the summer of 2012, Governor Matt Mead had to ask the federal government for disaster relief due to the drought. During the year before the request, ranchers working on non-irrigated land had lost about half their pasture grass and hay production because of the drought, a state agriculture official told Reuters. <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/21/the-seven-states-running-out-of-water/#ixzz2P2lNh39V" target="_blank">Read more at 24/7 Wall St. </a>

  • 5. South Dakota

<strong>Percent of state in severe drought:</strong> 86.3% <strong>Percent of state in extreme drought:</strong> 67.5% (2nd highest) <strong>Percent of state in exceptional drought:</strong> 20.1% (4th highest) More than two-thirds of South Dakota suffers from extreme drought, the second highest portion of any state. Additionally, South Dakota is one of just four states where more than 20% of its area faces exceptional drought. As with many other states, much of South Dakota?s winter wheat crop was hurt by the lack of precipitation. According to the USDA, at the end of February, 66% of winter wheat crop was considered to be in poor or very poor condition, up from 31% in February 2012. <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/21/the-seven-states-running-out-of-water/#ixzz2P2lNh39V" target="_blank">Read more at 24/7 Wall St. </a>

  • 4. Colorado

<strong>Percent of state in severe drought:</strong> 89.0% <strong>Percent of state in extreme drought:</strong> 48.1% (7th highest) <strong>Percent of state in exceptional drought:</strong> 21.2% (3rd highest) Colorado is one of five states where all of its area is considered to be in moderate drought, with nearly 90% of the state experiencing severe drought. With the exception of the Northeast corner of the state, the drought is expected to either persist or get worse over the next several months. Yet even most the Northeast corner is experiencing either extreme or exceptional drought. Due to the ongoing problems, several of Colorado?s largest municipal water providers are considering restricting spring and summer lawn-watering, potentially limiting landowners to watering their grass just twice a week. Crop production declined significantly in 2012 compared to 2011, with wheat production falling 9.3%, while corn production falling a whopping 29%. <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/21/the-seven-states-running-out-of-water/#ixzz2P2lNh39V" target="_blank">Read more at 24/7 Wall St. </a>

  • 3. New Mexico

<strong>Percent of state in severe drought:</strong> 89.9% <strong>Percent of state in extreme drought:</strong> 49.9% (6th highest) <strong>Percent of state in exceptional drought:</strong> 4.3% (8th highest) As of early March, normal weather conditions persist in only about 0.21% of New Mexico ? the highest percentage in nearly a year. However, for most of the state problems remain. Last July, the USDA designated Cibola County as a primary disaster area due to drought. Six counties bordering Cibola, including Bernalillo County where Albuquerque is located, also qualified for natural disaster assistance. In late February, Albuquerque?s water board announced a ?drought watch,? which raised fines for wasting water to $40 for first offenders. <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/21/the-seven-states-running-out-of-water/#ixzz2P2lNh39V" target="_blank">Read more at 24/7 Wall St. </a>

  • 2. Kansas

<strong>Percent of state in severe drought:</strong> 96.4% <strong>Percent of state in extreme drought:</strong> 64.6% (3rd highest) <strong>Percent of state in exceptional drought:</strong> 21.4% (2nd highest) Severe drought conditions persist in more than 96% of Kansas. Furthermore, nearly two-thirds of the state is experiencing extreme drought, while more than one-fifth is experiencing exceptional drought. The good news for Kansas is that rain in March has eased the drought, although National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Kleinsasser told the Associated Press earlier this week that the state is still experiencing ?precipitation deficits? of as much as 20 inches in many parts of the state. Kansas produces about 20% of the nation?s wheat, more than any other state. Wheat production was up 38% in 2012 compared to 2011, although the drought affecting the state probably will make this level of production unsustainable for 2013. <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/21/the-seven-states-running-out-of-water/#ixzz2P2lNh39V" target="_blank">Read more at 24/7 Wall St. </a>

  • 1. Nebraska

<strong>Percent of state in severe drought:</strong> 100% <strong>Percent of state in extreme drought:</strong> 96.1% (the highest) <strong>Percent of state in exceptional drought:</strong> 76.4% (the highest) Nebraska is unique among all states in that all areas are experiencing at least a severe drought. Worse, extreme drought conditions persist in more than 96% of the state, with a stunning 76% of the state experiencing exceptional drought. In the next worst-hit state, Kansas, just 21.4% of all area suffers from exceptional drought. Drought has hurt much of the state?s winter wheat crop, 50% of which was in poor or very poor condition at the end of February, up from just 6% last year. The National Weather Service?s Climate Prediction Center estimates that the drought in Nebraska will last ? with some improvement in conditions ? through at least the end of May. <a href="http://247wallst.com/2013/03/21/the-seven-states-running-out-of-water/#ixzz2P2lNh39V" target="_blank">Read more at 24/7 Wall St. </a>

Look out squirrels: Leopards are new backyard wildlife

Friday, March 29, 2013

A new study led by WCS-India scientist Vidya Athreaya finds that certain landscapes of western India completely devoid of wilderness and with high human populations are crawling with a different kind of backyard wildlife: leopards.

The study found as many as five adult large carnivores, including leopards and striped hyenas, per 100 square kilometers (38 square miles), a density never before reported in a human-dominated landscape.

The study, called "Big Cats in Our Backyards," appeared in the March 6 edition of the journal PLoS One. Authors include: Vidya Athreya and Ullas Karanth of the Wildlife Conservation Society and Centre for Wildlife Studies in Bangalore; Morten Odden of Hedmark University College; John D. C. Linnell of the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research; and Jagdish Krishnaswamy of Asoka Trust for Research of Ecology in the Environment.

Using camera traps, the authors founds that leopards often ranged close to houses at night though remained largely undetected by the public. Despite this close proximity between leopards and people, there are few instances of attacks in this region. The authors also photographed rusty spotted cat, small Indian civet, Indian fox, jungle cat, jackal, mongoose ? and a variety of people from the local communities. The research took place in western Maharashtra, India.

"Human attacks by leopards were rare despite a potentially volatile situation considering that the leopard has been involved in serious conflict, including human deaths in adjoining areas," said big cat expert Ullas Karanth of WCS. "The results of our work push the frontiers of our understanding of the adaptability of both humans and wildlife to each other's presence."

The authors say that the findings show that conservationists must look outside of protected areas for a more holistic approach to safeguarding wildlife in a variety of landscapes.

United delays Denver-Toyko service as 787s sit

CHICAGO (AP) ? United Airlines is delaying its new Denver-Tokyo service ? again ? because its new Boeing 787 jets remain grounded.

United said Friday that service between Denver and Tokyo's Narita Airport will begin June 10. The airline had already pushed back the original March 31 start to at least May 12.

The airline said that it was still determined to use the plane on the new route.

The 787, which Boeing calls the Dreamliner, promises a more comfortable ride for passengers and significant fuel savings for airline customers. But all 50 of the planes in airline fleets are grounded because of incidents involving smoldering batteries in January.

Boeing Co.'s fix for the lithium-ion batteries includes putting more space around cells and wrapping the batteries in steel cases.

Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel said Friday that the changes "will add several layers of additional safety features" to the batteries. He said Boeing was moving as quickly as possible on the testing and certification process without taking short cuts.

CEO Jim McNerney said Thursday that Boeing feels it is "very close" to getting the 787 approved for passenger flights.

The company conducted a 2-hour test flight of a 737 on Monday over Washington and Oregon and reported that everything went according to plan. Boeing is doing follow-up work in preparation for another test flight in which it would demonstrate the battery system's performance for Federal Aviation Administration experts.

Simple Tips For The Do It Yourselfer Home Improvement | How To ...

TIP! Add value to your house by refinishing your wood flooring. Although it takes a lot of work to re-finish floors properly, the job isn?t really that complex.

Would you like to feel confident about home improvement projects? Perhaps you just want to save money, or maybe you don?t want strangers in your home. Whatever your motivation for taking matters into your own hands, here are some home improvement tips that will make your home improvements easier.

TIP! Inspect the foundation of your home for damage as part of your yearly winterizing routine. Insects and rodents will hide in small warm places which is why you need to seal any entry point to keep pest away.

Try reusing materials when you?re doing a home improvement project so that money can be saved as well as the environment. Why not give your cabinets a fresh look by painting them? You can give them a facelift by replacing the handles and knobs on them. Additionally, you can paint your ceramic tile for a new look at a fraction of the cost.

TIP! Don?t forget about safety. Any project involves risk; therefore, you should thoroughly read over instructions on any power tools you plan on using.

Use a sponge when installing drywall. Rather than sanding drywall seams, you should use a sponge. A wet sponge can be as effective as careful sanding when it comes to smoothing out seams. The advantage is that sponging doesn?t kick up all of the dust that sanding does.

TIP! Give an old luggage rack a chance to shine by turning it into a low cost, but effective side table in your living room. Just take glass out of an old picture frame and set it on top, adhering it with permanent glue.

Try planting a tree as an inexpensive way to improve the curb appeal of your home. A well landscaped yard can significantly boost your home?s value. It will also, eventually, shade your home. In addition, a tree placed in the right location can lower cooling costs by 40 percent.

TIP! Add a new sink to an old kitchen. This will create a modernized look to your kitchen.

Keep any small jars (like baby food jars) for use in organizing your space. You can screw or superglue the jar lids under the wall shelf. You can use these jars to store different items like nails and screws. Twist the jars into the lids back under the shelf. This helps take full advantage of a wall shelf and small jars you didn?t think you would ever need.

TIP! Be careful when demolishing areas to be improved in your home. Many people have the urge to go as fast as they can to speed things up.

The information you just read will help you as you embark on your home improvement journey. You can achieve your dream look without hiring other people to do the work. Follow the advice in this article and you?ll be well on your way to realizing your dream.

German migrant program offers cautions for US

BERLIN (AP) ? In gritty backstreets of Berlin, housewives wearing head scarves shop for lamb and grape leaves. Old men pass the time in cafes sipping coffee, chatting in Turkish and reading Turkish newspapers.

More than three million people of Turkish origin live in Germany ? the legacy of West Germany's Cold War-era program to recruit temporary foreign labor during the boom years of the 1950s and 1960s when the country rebuilt after World War II.

What started as a temporary program has changed the fabric of German urban life ? from mosques on street corners to countless shops selling widely popular Doener kebab fast food sandwiches.

Germany's experience with "guest workers" offers lessons for the United States as it debates immigration reform, including whether to provide a path to citizenship for unskilled foreign laborers, or whether there should be additional temporary-only visas for such workers. President Barack Obama has urged Congress to begin debate in April after lawmakers return from a two-week recess.

Decades after Germany's formal guest worker program ended in the early 1970s, the country is still wrestling with ways to integrate Turks ? the second biggest group among the estimated 15 million-strong immigrant community after ethnic Germans who moved from the former Soviet Union and for Soviet bloc countries ? into German society.

"When you bring people to work, it's quite hard to tell them to go back one day," said Goecken Demiragli, a social worker whose grandmother came to Berlin from Turkey in 1968. "That was the biggest mistake: to think that if you don't need them, they will go."

Initially, the Germans felt they didn't need an integration path.

They foresaw a temporary program of rotating labor, where workers from Turkey, the Balkans and southern Europe would spend a couple of years on an assembly line and then go home to be replaced by others if industry still needed them.

But factory managers grew tired of retraining new workers every couple of years and convinced authorities to allow contract extensions.

Many immigrants, especially young Turkish men who faced grinding unemployment at home, opted to stay in Germany, bringing their families and building lives here despite discrimination in education, housing and employment.

Although immigrants could stay legally with government-issued residence permits, they could not apply for citizenship for 15 years, although the period has been shortened in recent years. Without fluent German, and state-supported language programs, many were unable to pursue good educations and well-paying jobs.

As a result, the Turkish community remains the least integrated immigrant group in Germany, according to the private Berlin Institute for Population and Development.

Immigration critics blame the Turks for refusing to abandon traditions of rural Turkey, failing to learn German and take advantage of educational opportunities. Critics note that more than 90 percent of marriages by ethnic Turks are to other Turks ? in part because of cultural restrictions against marrying outside the Muslim faith.

Over the years, the existence of a parallel society of marginalized people speaking a different language and following different religious and social customs has triggered a backlash in a country which only recently has considered itself a nation that welcomes immigrants.

Thilo Sarrazin, once a top official of Germany's central bank, wrote in a 2010 best-seller that immigrants were dumbing down German society and that Turkish and Arab immigrants were reluctant to integrate. The firestorm that followed forced Sarrazin out of his bank post, but his book sold over 1.5 million copies.

Others fault successive German governments for being slow to recognize the immigration problem and moving only in recent years to put in place programs to combat discrimination, provide German language training and offer a speedier path to full citizenship.

"The West German government should have devised comprehensive integration measures as part of family reunification policies but did not," a 2009 study for the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute. "Consequently, integration problems began to take root in West Germany."

In the meantime, an entire generation grew up feeling estranged, living in urban ghettoes apart from the mainstream and unable to take part in political life. Even well-educated Turks who have assimilated believe that stigma remains alive today.

"There's this categorization ... that you are not the same as the others," said Demiragli, the social worker, who was born in Germany but did not get citizenship until she was 16. "That is a feeling that grows in you if you do not have strong parents who can support you and give you the feeling that you are still special."

Overt discrimination has abated since the 1970s and 1980s when real estate ads in German newspapers contained phrases like "Only for Germans" or "No Foreigners." But Turkish residents say subtle barriers remain.

"Now it's more hidden," said Bekir Yilmaz, head of a Turkish community organization in Berlin. "You look for housing, you make a telephone call, you can speak German well but when you stand in front of the landlord, they say, 'Oh, the apartment is taken.'"

Yilmaz believes the problem has worsened since the 9/11 attacks in the United States and the war on terror smeared the image of Muslims.

"The West had its enemy in communism but communism is gone. Now it's the Muslims," Yilmaz said. "The Turks here are no enemy. They have lived here for years, and their children born here. This has nothing to do with reality."

German attitudes toward immigration and citizenship also proved an obstacle to full and rapid integration. Although attitudes are changing, Germany never perceived itself as an immigrant society like the United States. German society values conformity.

Unlike the United States, Germany does not automatically grant citizenship to anyone born on German soil. Even though the naturalization process has been shortened, it still takes years and requires knowledge of the German language and history.

In 2000, a new law granted German citizenship to German-born children of longtime legal residents. By age 23, those children must decide whether to keep German citizenship or their parents' nationality.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government has refused calls from Turkish and other immigrant communities to allow dual citizenship. Many immigrants are reluctant to apply for German citizenship because they want to hold on to their original nationality.

"I think we should have a dual citizenship here in Germany," said Ayvaz Harra, a German citizen of Turkish origin who sells bread in a Berlin market. "My family has property in Turkey and I would like to inherit it. Right now it's not possible."

But others believe the core problem was the government's failure to foresee the long-term effects of the temporary labor program.

"The problem here is that there is a picture of how Germans should live and if somebody is living differently, it doesn't fit," Demiragli said. "I think that in 20 to 30 years it will be a totally mixed community, especially here in Berlin. If we get over that 20 years, I think it will be a totally different situation."

Two Coaching Approaches You Can Learn Watching Basketball ...

I?m a big (especially college) basketball fan, and so right now is a good time to be alive. Whether you are a fan or not, you may be watching at least part of a game over the next couple weeks?I know I will. My hope from this post is that you will want to watch for a new reason.

I recently wrote on my blog about five coaching lessons we can learn from watching basketball (you can read them here), but today, with 16 teams left, I want to share two major lessons about coaching approaches that you can learn when you turn on the game. These are two basic approaches to coaching that you will see and hear the announcers talking about, that are completely connected to and related to our success in coaching others at work.

The Two Approaches

Coaching technically. Good basketball coaches need to know the specifics of the game?the x?s and o?s. They need to know what to do in certain game situations, draw up the right plays and more. As a leader, you need to know the x?s and o?s of your business too. Can you coach people to the specifics of their work and work processes? Do you have specific job or industry experience that applies to their work activities? Have you done their job? Or do you at least know enough to know what the right skills and behaviors are, even if you don?t know every specific?

These are good questions, and inform our coaching perspective and approach. But they lead to another question ... can you coach others without these specifics?

Well, it depends. I believe you must have (or be willing to develop) the understanding of the work enough to help people move in the right directions, create the right measures, etc. Having at least these basics helps you succeed and builds your credibility and trust in the eyes of those you coach. If your technical expertise isn?t top notch, you must have others on your team with this intimate knowledge to support you (some basketball coaches have specialists to coach the offensive or defensive strategies, or focus on analyzing the upcoming opponent, for example).

Coaching relationally. Good coaches also need to know their players. Watch the games and you will see this style as well?coaches more focused on the people than the game specifics. We expect sports coaches to inspire, encourage, and support?in fact, we would be surprised if that energy was missing. Yet how often are you providing these things to your team members? Are you adept at and/or willing to develop these skills and perspectives? When we coach from a place of energy and relationship we are also building trust?less due to credibility and more due to a clear intention and belief.

While successful coaches can have a strength or style that leans to one of these approaches, both are required. Hopefully you noticed that underneath both styles, a reason they work is that both approaches create trust in those we coach?and trust is critical to successful coaching outcomes.

As you watch the games, see what you notice from the coaches in terms of these styles. Then, translate that back to you by reflecting on your tendency and style. Doing that will make your game-watching as valuable as it is enjoyable.

Sony KDL-32R400A

The Sony 32R400A is an LED-backlit 720p set that doesn't try to be anything other than a simple 32-inch HDTV. It doesn't have Web apps, it doesn't have 3D, and it doesn't have any other functions that make it useable without plugging in a cable, antenna, or Blu-ray player. Still, this $399.99 (direct) HDTV is worth considering if you're looking for a smaller screen for a guest bedroom, office, or kitchen, and are on a strict budget. Even so, you won't get as good picture quality as with our Editors' Choice budget set, the 42-inch RCA LED42C45RQ.?

Design
Very plain looking, visually, the 32R400A is little more than a 32-inch monitor with HDMI ports. Its bezel is flat and black, only punctuated by a Sony logo and a power light. Its 3-inch-thick frame is a bit chunky compared with larger budget HDTVs like the Westinghouse UW40T2BW, despite its LED backlighting. It sits on a rectangular plastic base that keeps the screen relatively low and very stable, but doesn't allow any pivoting adjustment.

A few basic control buttons are tucked behind the right edge of the screen, while an MHL-equipped HDMI port and a USB port sit opposite behind the left side of the screen. An additional HDMI port, along with component and composite hybrid video inputs, a 3.5mm audio output, a digital audio output, and a coaxial connector for cable or antenna can be found on the back of the screen. They're slightly awkwardly placed if you want to mount the set on a wall.

The 6.2-inch remote is small, flat, and simple. The buttons aren't backlit, and are clustered together fairly closely, so entering numbers blindly takes some practice. On the other hand, the direction pad and Volume and Channel buttons are large and distinct enough to find easily with your thumb.

Performance
We evaluate HDTVs using a Klein K10-A Colorimeter, DisplayMate test patterns, and SpectraCal's CalMAN 5 diagnostic software. According to our tests, the 32R400A produces a respectable picture, albeit one that doesn't excel at brightness, black level, or color. After basic calibration with power saving features disabled, the 32R400A produced a peak brightness of 192.83 cd/m2 and a black level of 0.1 cd/m2 for an underwhelming contrast ratio of 1,923:1. As far as color accuracy, greens lean more towards blue than they should, and reds appear darker than ideal, as the CIE color comparison chart below shows. (The boxes represent the ideal values for the colors, while the dots indicate the measured values.) To compare, the $360, 40-inch TCL LE40FHDE3000 boasts a higher contrast ratio and black level of 4,821:1 and 0.06 cd/m2 respectively, and the Toshiba 32L2200U puts out a peak brightness of 303.81 cd/m2, but has a black level of 0.14 cd/m2. Color skewing is worse on the TCL set, however.

This is only a 720p screen, so you're not getting full 1080p HD resolution, but for its small size that's not a major flaw. Washed out shadow and highlight details and muddled greens are the biggest problems from which the 32R400A suffers. Black Swan on Blu-ray looked a bit faded and cloudy, with the deep and textured darks not showing clearly on the screen. In Piranha on Blu-ray, the very sunny party scenes looked blown out, and the greens of plants and blue-green of the water looked undersaturated. Nothing is skewed horribly to the point of yellow or green skin, but they colors don't have any sense of "pop," and the mediocre contrast ratio makes both shadows and highlights feel flat. Viewing angles are excellent, though, with the picture becoming only slightly pale when viewed from the far sides, matching Sony's claim of an 178-degree range.

As a 32-inch LED-backlit screen, the 32R400A is a modest energy user. It consumes 38 watts under normal use with power saving features turned off, and 33 watts with power saving set to low. Higher power saving features made the screen too dark to watch comfortably. The same-size Toshiba 32L2200U hits the middle ground between the two settings by consuming 35 watts, and the larger TCL 40-inch LE40FHDE3000 uses 50 watts.

The Sony 32R400A is a capable low-priced set that comes with the same flaws you get with many other budget TVs: a lack of features and middling picture quality. The colors, despite looking undersaturated, are relatively accurate compared with some other budget models. However, you can get an overall better (and larger) picture for less with the $360 40-inch TCL LE40FHDE3000. And the 42-inch RCA LED42C45RQ serves up superior picture quality for the price, so it's our Editors' Choice for under-$500 HDTVs.

88% Beyond The Hills

All Critics (64) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (56) | Rotten (8)

The film offers rewards for the patient viewer as it examines conflicting visions of love played out in a remote faith-based community.

An austere but subtly textured retelling of a 2005 news story in which a young woman died during an exorcism.

Fascinating [and] anguishing ...

Cristian Mungiu's "Beyond the Hills" moves so effortlessly through the gnarly intersection of love, loss, God and godlessness that you barely notice how much he's doing, and with such effortless grace.

Of all the movies culminating in a rite of exorcism, Romanian writer-director Cristian Mungiu's remarkable "Beyond the Hills" stands alone.

One of the year's most powerful films.

Such is the rigorous and high-minded nature of Romanian cinema that even a real-life exorcism story can inspire something loftier than a horror movie.

Heartbreak at a Romanian convent

...Cristian Mungiu has taken a real life event...to consider deeply human philosophies such as freedom vs. discipline, love vs. security, the choices facing those without financial recourse and the hypocrisies of organized religions.

I found it riveting to watch and fascinating to think about afterwards.

An undeniably tough watch.

Stark, deadpan, and darkly dry.

With this viscerally involving drama, acclaimed Romanian filmmaker Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) tells another strikingly original story of women caught between old and new world beliefs.

Mungiu is not preaching - he is telling us what can happen when people are trapped within their own emotions and circumstances. Remarkable.

Mungiu's human comedy leaves off where it begins (spoiler alert): out in the middle of nowhere, no direction home.

...if Beyond the Hills is an exorcism movie, the scariest thing about it is that there isn't a demon to be found.

The film's final shot goes straight to the story's heart and the spectator's. Amazing grace. Now at last we know what those words mean.

...quiet, but also quietly devastating, with detours down the roads of intolerance, mercilessness, cold rejection of outsiders' experiences, mystical and subjective interpretation of "signs," overt woman-on-woman misogyny and brutally strict penance...

A slowly, quietly riveting passion play for a nation grappling with secularism and modernity.

GameStick gets GameStop-backing, pre-loaded titles

OUYA may have nabbed the spotlight in the Android-based, Kickstarter-supported console wars, but the diminutive GameStick's got some heat behind it, too. The device's makers are putting on a bit of a show at this year's GDC, announcing a slew of news around the forthcoming product. At the top of the list are a number of backers, including, most prominently, the similarly-named GameStop, which clearly sees a viable future in such products, as the world continues to move away from brick-and-mortar outlets. Shadowgun and Smash Cops were also revealed as pre-installed titles for the console, "ensuring GameStick users have free, quality content ready to go out of the box."

Samsung Galaxy S 4 hits the FCC in MetroPCS and Sprint forms

Get ready for a small deluge of Galaxy S 4 filings at the FCC in the near future. Just a couple of weeks after Samsung's flagship hit the US agency in its international guise, we're now seeing the first US editions of the smartphone receive approval, starting with both MetroPCS (SCH-R970) and Sprint (SPH-L720) examples. Either has CDMA, EV-DO and LTE, although there's variances you'll want to watch for if you're free to choose between carriers: the Sprint version has HSPA 3G for world roaming, while the MetroPCS model drops HSPA but has a broad four bands of LTE meant mostly to support other mid-size American networks, like US Cellular. We still have AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon to go among the bigger US providers supporting the GS4, although it's just a matter of time before their models make FCC appearances.

Death in young children linked to their mother's poor health

Mar. 26, 2013 ? In poorer countries, young children are more likely to die in the months before their mother's death, when she is seriously ill, and also in the period after her death, according to a study by international researchers published in this week's PLOS Medicine.

These findings are important as they highlight the urgent need for proactive and coordinated community-based interventions to support families, especially vulnerable children, when a mother becomes seriously ill, not just in the period following her death.

Research was carried out in a large socio-economically disadvantaged area in northeast South Africa near the border with Mozambique. The team, led by Samuel Clark, Alan Stein and Kathleen Kahn from Washington, Oxford, and Witwatersrand Universities, reached these conclusions by studying 15 years of information (1994-2008) during which 1,244 children died (3% of the total population studied). Data came from a health and socio-demographic surveillance system run by the MRC / Wits Rural Health and Transitions Unit, a founding member of the INDEPTH Network (http://www.indepth-network.org).

The researchers found that the period in which children are more likely to die began 6 -- 11 months before their mother's death, and importantly, there were three distinct periods with a much higher chance (odds) of death: the period 1 -- 2 months before their mother's death (7-fold increase in odds of dying), the month of her death (12-fold increase in odds of dying) and the period 1 -- 2 months following her death (7-fold increase in odds of dying).

Furthermore, during the five-month period around the time of their mother's death, children (both boys and girls) aged 0 -- 6 months were about nine times more likely to die than children aged 24 -- 59 months. And, children were about 1.5 times more likely to die if their mother died of an AIDS-related cause rather than some other cause of death.

The authors say: "Young children's survival is put at substantial risk when their mothers become very ill. In particular, a period of very high risk for the child occurs in the two months prior to a mother's death and extends for two months after. "

They continue: "This effect is considerably greater when a mother has HIV and AIDS but the pattern is maintained for non-HIV-related causes."

The authors add: "Proactive and coordinated community-based interventions are urgently needed to support families when a mother becomes seriously ill, as well as following her death."

Blowing in the wind: How accurate is thermography of horses' legs?

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Since its introduction fifty or so years ago, thermography has been increasingly used by vets to pinpoint the cause of lameness in horses.? The method is fast and safe and is based on a simple idea.? The horse?s body surface emits infrared radiation that can be detected by an infrared camera, which is both easy and inexpensive to use.? The camera produces a coloured image that shows the variation in surface temperature across the area investigated.? The temperature is directly related to the presence of blood vessels near the skin, so the method can detect local inflammatory lesions or regions of modified blood flow and thus help localize the origin of lameness.

The theory is clear but to date there have been comparatively few investigations into the reliability of the method.? Furthermore, it is important to note that in practice trivial matters such as time constraints and movement of the horse can cause changes in both camera angle and distance of the camera to the area of the horse being investigated.? The effect to which these changes affect the results of thermographic imaging is unknown.? Finally, although it is generally accepted that thermographic imaging of horses should be performed in draught-free surroundings, there have not been any published studies on the effect of airflow on the results.

These issues have now been tackled by Simone Westermann of the Clinical Unit of Equine Surgery at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, together with colleagues at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni Vienna) and with Adrian Ion at the Vienna University of Technology.? The scientists found that the method was highly reproducible and was less sensitive to variations in camera position and angle than might be expected.? In fact, the results were almost completely unaffected by 20? changes in camera angle and increases of up to 50 cm in the distance of the camera from the animal.? At a distance of 1 m from the horse a 20? change in camera angle corresponds to about 35 cm.? This represents the effective horizontal tolerance in positioning of the camera.? As Westermann says, ?vets should have little difficulty in remaining within this limit, so the method is applicable in practice.?? Surprisingly, the results showed that horses? left and right forelimbs show minor differences in temperature and Westermann cautions that ?it might be important to take these into account before reaching a final diagnosis.?

The technique is thus reliable and robust, at least in terms of variation in where the camera is located.? However, it turned out to be extremely sensitive to even very gentle drafts.? A wind speed of less than 1 m/s causes a drop in measured temperature of about 0.6?C, while winds of 1.3-2.6 m/s cause a drop of 1.5?C and winds of 3-4 m/s cause a drop of 2.1?C.? The discrepancies are more than sufficient to lead to a wrong diagnosis, although even the highest wind speed tested is hardly perceptible:? it would barely cause leaves on trees to move.

Westermann is keen to note the relevance of her work for vets who work on horses.? As she says, ?It turns out that it is not too important to be sure that the camera is in exactly the correct position before taking measurements.? But it is essential to perform thermography on horses in a room that is completely free of draughts.? If you don?t, your diagnosis will be completely unreliable.?

Steve 'Cyanogen' Kondik leaves Samsung

Steve Kondik

Image: SF Android User Group

CM? founder 'decided to do something new,' offers thoughts on Galaxy S4

In a Google+ post this morning, CyanogenMod founder Steve Kondik offered some of his thoughts on Samsung's new Galaxy S4, before revealing that he's recently left the software engineering job he took at the company just over 18 months ago. In a further G+ comment, Kondik said his exit wasn't "because of anything in particular," adding "Samsung was great. Just decided to do something new."

On the S4 itself, he had praise for the new phone's hardware, saying " the device actually feels quite a bit more solid than the S3" and claiming "specwise, this device blows the competition out of the water." But on the software side, Kondik was critical of Samsung's latest TouchWiz UI. While "more consistent" than earlier iterations, he says, the new TouchWiz's fully tabbed UI "feels like it has been sent a few years back in time to the Froyo days."

The CM founder also had mixed opinions on some of the S4's new features. He praised the touchless "hover" preview capabilities and multi-window support, but said that the eye-tracking "smart scroll" feature "mostly serves to anger me into disabling it." In summary, Kondik called the Galaxy S4 a "solid device" and a "clear choice" for those upgrading from a Galaxy S2. S3 owners, he said, should feel "right at home."

There weren't any real clues as to where Steve Kondik might end up next, but we're sure we're not alone in hoping there's more Android in his future. Best of luck to Steve in his future endeavors!

Nature versus nurture -- better looking birds have healthier babies

Monday, March 25, 2013

A female great tits' (Parus major) appearance is shown to signal healthy attributes in offspring in a paper in BioMed Central's open access journal Frontiers in Zoology. The black stripe across her breast and white patches on her cheeks correlate to a chick's weight at two weeks and immune strength respectively ? though the former seems to signal a genetic benefit and the latter can affect an 'adopted' chick's health, suggesting nurture is involved.

Taking two mothers with different patterning, and swapping their chicks, researchers from Palacky University in the Czech Republic were able to investigate the growth and health of the infants and the 'ornamentation' of their mothers. They compared the offspring's weight, size and immune strength and found a correlation between the chick's weight at two weeks and the size of black breast stripe on the genetic mother.

The immaculateness of both genetic and foster mother's white cheek patch was related to the strength of chick's immune response suggesting that this was due to both nurture and genetics. In contrast the body size of a chick was related only to the body size of its genetic mother and not to ornamentation at all.

In these socially monogamous birds both the males and females are brightly coloured, however neither the cheek patch nor the stripe in males affected the health of the babies.

Talking about how the ornaments can have evolved to signal reproductive fitness, Vladim?r Reme? and Beata Matysiokov? who performed this study explained, "Bigger healthier babies are important to the reproductive success of individuals, because they are more likely to survive to adulthood - so it is useful for birds to be able to work out which potential mates will produce the best babies. Maintaining bright colouration uses up resources which could otherwise be invested in reproduction or self-maintenance - consequently the evolution and maintenance of ornamentation in female great tits is probably due to direct selection by males."

Spotify Reveal Plans For Video Streaming Service - internet TV

Popular music streaming service Spotify have been rumoured to be planning a new competitor in the video streaming market, in an attempt to take on dominant brands such as Netflix and Amazon.

spotify_logoThe American service is one of the biggest names in online music, and while they have taken on some format changes in recent times (including removing a ?five-song limit? for free ad-supported users after a 6-month trial, and launching a ?browser-based version? of their service), a transition to cover videos as well as music would not have been on many people?s agendas.

Reports from Business Insider suggest that as well as potentially streaming ?existing TV shows?, Spotify would follow the lead of what is working right now at the top of the video streaming market and order exclusive new series to add unique appeal to their platform.

Netflix?have already proven the success of this method through this year?s new political drama?House Of Cards, and around the world?YouTube and BBC iPlayer have recently followed suit with announcements of internet-exclusives, even if in the latter?s case it is only temporary.

While the reports of a new video service remain unclarified, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has previously hinted at his company looking into video, stating: ?I won?t rule it out because we?re a company that looks at what we?re doing incredibly long term. But right now, we?re all focused on music.?

Being supported by investments from the likes of Coca-Cola and Goldman Sachs contributing to a company value of $3b, Spotify easily have the finances and brand presence to enter a video streaming platform, but do they have the strategy and know-how to sufficiently add to their video offerings? For now, however, they just seem to be only ?for music?:

U.S. regulators approve plan for lost Facebook IPO money

Mon Mar 25, 2013 6:57pm IST

REUTERS - U.S regulators on Monday approved a plan to compensate market makers who lost money in a botched Facebook Inc (FB.O) public offering in May on the Nasdaq exchange.

Nasdaq, a unit of Nasdaq OMX Group Inc (NDAQ.O), has proposed a revised $62 million settlement to those brokerages that lost money.

The decision from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was in response to a series of high-profile glitches last year that shook the market, including the handling of Facebook's long-anticipated initial public offering.

The May 18 IPO, which raised $16 billion, was initially delayed by 30 minutes due to a technical problem at Nasdaq.

The exchange then decided to get the stock trading by using a secondary system that ended up leading to delays of many clients' orders and confirmations. This cost some investors and traders big losses as the stock price dropped after an initial gain.

Mississippi lawmaker found dead of apparent gunshot wound

AP / File

Rep. Jessica Upshaw was found dead from a gunshot wound Sunday afternoon.

By Daniel Arkin, Staff Writer, NBC News

Mississippi officials are investigating the?death of state legislator who was found?at the home of a former colleague Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.

State Rep. Jessica Upshaw, 53, appeared to have died of a gunshot wound, Simpson County Sheriff Kenneth Lewis told?NBC station WLBT?in Jackson, Miss. ?

?It appeared she had a gunshot wound to her head. It appeared to be self-inflicted,? Lewis told?WLBT?.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation, and thus far have said little about the ongoing investigation.

Upshaw, a Republican who had served in the state legislature since 2004 representing District 95, was discovered at the private residence of former state lawmaker Clint Rotenberry, in Mendenhall, Miss., more than 100 miles from her home near the Gulf Coast.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R)?released a statement?Sunday evening praising the late lawmaker.

"I have known Jessica for many years as an unselfish and dedicated public servant. This is a tragic loss for her family and all Mississippians, and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this difficult time," Bryant said.

Upshaw's death marks the fifth time in as many months that a Mississippi lawmaker has passed away, although the other four died of natural causes.

"Once again this session, the House has been touched by tragedy," Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn, said in a statement. "Rep. Jessica Upshaw was an outstanding legislator and friend. She was one of the brightest and most competent members of the House."

Upshaw, a former attorney, was chairwoman of the Conservation and Natural Resources Committee in the Mississippi House of Representatives.

Questions remain after Obama?s Israel trip

President Obama almost made it through his trip to Israel without demonstrating the incoherence at the heart of his approach to the region. Almost.

If he now understands and can recite how many times Israel has offered the Palestinians their own state, why was he lecturing Israeli students on the unjustness of the Palestinians lack of statehood?

If he extolled Israeli democracy, why wasn?t he telling?Mahmoud Abbas to have free and fair elections?

If he understands that there are to be ?two states for two peoples,? why doesn?t he adopt as U.S. policy ? as he did with ?1967 borders? plus land swaps ? the truism that the right of return?for Palestinians must be only?to the Palestinian state?

If he respects the Israelis? elected government and its right to make decisions on its own, why go to a university to implore college kids to lobby their government to make peace? And what else could Israel offer that hasn?t been tried already?

The biggest impediment to peace, of course, is that the Palestinian Authority has made a pact with Hamas. Maybe Obama should have mentioned that and the impossibility of a Palestinian state so long as that embrace continues.

The problem with merely changing rhetoric is that exposes the gap between speeches and mindset and between rhetoric and actions.

Nevertheless, friends of Israel will be glad to hear that Obama will leave the fruitless peace processing to Secretary of State John Kerry and not use his own good offices to strong-arm Israel. And?Obama has dropped the ?illegitimate? modifier to ?settlements.?

The most curious part of the trip came at the very end. I?have a great deal of sympathy?with this sentiment expressed by the New York Sun:

Mr. Obama ended his visit by hornswoggling Prime Minister Netanyahu into apologizing to the Turkish premier, Recep Erdogan, for the deaths on the?Motor Vessel Mavi Marmarra.?We don?t fault Mr. Netanyahu. . . .?But sending the?Mavi Marmarra?to run Israel?s blockade was one of the most provocative acts any major country has ever countenanced against Israel. The blood of the nine dead is entirely on Turkish hands. It was the Turk who owed the apology. By maneuvering things the other way around Mr. Obama offered an incentive for more trouble that will mar the good feelings he seems so sincerely to want to engender.

Ironically, what?a U.N. investigation?defended (astonishingly for the United Nations)?? Israel?s right of self-defense and right to maintain a blockade? Obama pressured Israel to apologize for to the enablers of the raid.

One can argue that the terms if the apology are muted. It went to pains to reiterate that?Israel?s own report found there?were missteps (?In light of Israel?s investigation into the incident, which pointed to a number of operational mistakes, the prime minister expressed Israel?s apology to the Turkish people for any mistakes that might have led to the loss of life or injury?).

One can hope that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu got something more than restoration of diplomatic relations (A green light from Obama on Iran? A promise of bunker-buster bombs?) to make it worth his while. But to the outside world this will look like the United States leaning on Israel to apologize for defending itself. That, unfortunately, sends the wrong signal to the PA, Hamas, Turkey?and just about everyone in the region. And unless Israel got something very dear in return, it suggests that Obama still views Israel as the party responsible for conflict and violence.

Logitech rebrands gaming line with same name, announces bounty of peripherals

Logitech's G-prefixed gaming peripherals have been around for awhile, but they were never part of an official gaming line. That changes today, with the introduction of Logitech G, the company's official brand for PC gaming peripherals. "The overriding principal of G is that science wins," Logitech told us. "Just as gamers are compelled to beat levels, our engineers are compelled to test scientific theories." A fancy way to say that Logitech's gaming hardware is built using the latest technology.

The company points to its new line of peripherals as an example: eight products featuring hydrophobic coatings, Logitech's exclusive Delta Zero sensor technology and buttons capable of surviving over 20 million toggles. Headlining the new series are the G700s rechargeable gaming mouse and G19s keyboard, which promise anti-stick surfaces, more than a dozen programmable buttons apiece and $100 and $200 price tags, respectively. The company's rounding out its line up with a pair of audio devices, too -- the G430 and G230 surround and stereo gaming headsets. That's just the tip of the iceberg of course -- head past the break for Logitech's full roster of G series peripherals.
