Tropical depression moving in Pacific off Mexico

Tropical Storm Dalila has formed in the Pacific off southwest Mexico and authorities have issued a tropical storm warning for a swath of that country's coastline.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the fourth tropical storm of the season formed Sunday about 260 miles (420 kilometers) southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, and is moving northward at 10 mph (17 kph). The storm has top sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph).

Mexico's government issued a tropical storm warning for its Pacific coast region from Punta San Telmo to Manzanillo. The Miami center says the storm is expected to strengthen in the next 48 hours.

Forecasters say tropical storm conditions are expected to first reach the coast early Monday with 1 to 3 inches of rain expected over some areas.

Pa. girl doing well after 2nd lung transplant

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? A 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl whose parents sued to challenge national lung transplant rules has received a second set of lungs after the first failed, and her family says she's taken some breaths on her own.

However, she faces another operation because of complications from the second double-lung transplant.

The mother of Sarah Murnaghan says that the first set of lungs failed within hours of the June 12 transplant at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She says she was placed back on the lung transplant list the night after her surgery and received a second set on June 15.

Sarah's mother says the second transplant was a success. But, Sarah was placed back on a ventilator due to partial paralysis of her diaphragm, that's not allowing her lungs to expand.

She is scheduled for surgery on Monday in an effort to repair her diaphragm.

Obama tours prison where Nelson Mandela toiled

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) ? President Barack Obama is touring South Africa's Robben Island, where former South African President Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in a tiny cell as a political prisoner.

Obama, his wife and two daughters are viewing the lime quarry where Mandela toiled during captivity. It's also where the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader developed the lung problems ailing him today.

The Obamas' tour guide is 83-year-old politician Ahmed Kathrada (AH-med kahth-RAH-dah), who was also held captive at the prison. He's telling the Obamas the prisoners were forced to work every day.

Obama has been paying tribute to Mandela throughout his weeklong trip to three African countries. Obama will give a major speech later Sunday at the University of Cape Town. The White House says the speech will be infused with memories of Mandela.

Spartanburg shortstop Tanner Rogers leaps to avoid Inman runner James Deal at second base on Friday night at Duncan Park.

Last Modified: Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 12:29 a.m.

The Spartanburg Post 28 hitters suddenly became the least of Inman pitcher Bradley Gentry's concerns Friday evening as weather became a far greater opponent.

Facts

Gaffney 7, Union 3

Gaffney moved to a just a half-game out of second place in Legion Six on Friday night with a 7-3 win at home against Union.

Grant McKinney pitched seven strong innings in relief, allowing only six hits and two runs while striking out five. Bradley Norman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Will Byars was 2-for-4 with a run batted in. For Union, Juawan Rice was 3-for-5, while Larecus Hughes and A.J. Hunter each had a pair of hits.

Gaffney (5-6) trails Spartanburg (5-5) in a tight race for second. Inman (9-2) leads the way. Greer is 5-7 and Union dropped to 3-7. Four of the five teams will make the playoffs.

? Staff report

The lefty was racing against time to get one more out and make it an official game as the rain rapidly worsened. His Post 45 squad led 7-2 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on first and a 3-1 count on the batter when play was suspended and never resumed.

Inman coach Steve Skinner later spoke by phone with Post 28 athletics officer John Barron and was told a decision on whether to restart the game over or resume it from point of stoppage wouldn't be made until this morning. Skinner said it was home team Spartanburg's decision on how to proceed. Neither Barron nor Spartanburg coach Barry Keith could be reached for further comment.

?To stop a ballgame just because it's raining, with no lightning and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning is really unbelievable,? Skinner said. ?It is disappointing because we've had rain every day for the past two or three weeks and everybody is behind in the schedule and it ain't really a matter of whether you're winning or losing it's trying to get ball games in.?

Spartanburg scored twice in the second on Bradley Scrugg's two-run single before Inman responded with a seven-run fourth that put Gentry into hyper-mode with the rain rapidly arriving.

?I was trying to rush a little bit out there, but it was hard to do much of anything at that point because you could barely see the (catcher's) signs and the ball was soaking wet.?

Inman sent 13 batters to the plate in the fourth and took advantage of some sloppy Post 28 fielding with key hits. Shortstop Drew Lipscomb had a two-run double and Cory Cremonese barely missed homering for a third consecutive game with an RBI-double off the top of the left-field wall.

?Everybody has probably had their times where it just looks like a volleyball up there at the plate and when you see it just seems like you can't miss,? Cremonese said.

Inman challenged for more, but left the bases loaded to end both the fourth and fifth frames.

?Hitting is contagious and we've been doing a good job of putting the ball in play and capitalizing on our opponent's errors,? Lipscomb said. ?We've been hitting it good from top to bottom of the lineup.?

Israeli chief rabbi suspends self over fraud probe

JERUSALEM (AP) ? One of Israel's two chief rabbis has suspended himself over a police probe into an alleged money laundering scheme.

Yona Metzger's lawyers said Sunday he decided to refrain from carrying out any official roles during the police inquiry. Metzger was questioned last week over fraud and bribery allegations. Police raided his home and office following a months-long undercover investigation into his financial dealings. He denies the allegations.

Metzger is only weeks away from ending his 10-year term as the country's chief rabbi for Israel's Ashkenazi, or European-descended, Jews. Along with a second chief rabbi from the Sephardic, or Middle Eastern lineage, Metzger has led the country's supreme body for overseeing Jewish services.

In 2005, Metzger was also questioned over fraud allegations. No charges were filed.

Blackhawks lead Bruins 4-3 after 2nd of Game 4

BOSTON (AP) ? Jonathan Toews broke a scoring slump in Chicago's three-goal onslaught in the second period against previously stingy goalie Tuukka Rask, and the Blackhawks led the Boston Bruins 4-3 through two periods in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals on Wednesday night.

In an unusually wide-open game, the teams combined for five goals in the second period after the first ended in a 1-1 tie on goals by Chicago's Michal Handzus and Boston's Rich Peverley.

Patrick Kane and Marcus Kruger also scored for Chicago. Milan Lucic and Patrice Bergeron countered for Boston.

Game 5 between the Original Six teams will be back in Chicago on Saturday night. The clubs split the first two games of the series there in overtime.

Rask posted his third shutout of the postseason with a 2-0 win on Monday night that gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. He began Game 4 with a shutout streak of 122 minutes, 26 seconds.

That ended at 129:14 when Handzus scored a short-handed goal at 6:48 of the first period. Then Peverley, who had been struggling offensively, scored his second playoff goal during a rare power-play shift for him at 14:43.

Toews and Kane led the Blackhawks with 23 goals each this season, and neither had scored a goal in the Cup finals. In fact, Toews had gone 10 straight games without one and now has two goals in 21 playoff games.

His fortunes changed when he gave Chicago a 2-1 lead at 6:33 of the second. Michal Rozsival fired a low rising shot from the right point that Toews tipped in near the right post.

Just over two minutes later, Kane made it 3-1. Bryan Bickell shot the puck from low in the left circle. Rask deflected it to the other side and then scrambled to get back in position, but Kane converted the rebound at 8:41.

The Bruins stayed aggressive and it paid off when Lucic got his sixth goal of the postseason at 14:43. Zdeno Chara passed the puck from the left boards to Lucic in the slot for a backhand from 10 feet past goalie Corey Crawford.

Then it was the Blackhawks' turn to come back, and it took less than a minute.

Kruger put his own rebound past Rask for his third postseason goal this year at 15:32.

But that 4-2 lead didn't hold up for long in the back-and-forth game.

At 17:22, Bergeron scored his eighth goal of the playoffs off an odd bounce during a power play. Chara's shot hit the glass behind Crawford and bounced back off the top of the net. It ended up in the slot, and Bergeron put it in to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Handzus had scored the first goal after Brandon Saad stole the puck from Tyler Seguin in the Boston zone and raced up the right side. He crossed the blue line and then passed across the slot to Handzus, who beat Rask from about 5 feet.

Then Peverley tied it. Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference kept the puck in the zone when he went to his knees at the left point. He passed it toward Peverley near the right circle. Peverley controlled the puck and took a shot from the inside edge of the circle, beating goalie Crawford to the near side.

The Blackhawks, Stanley Cup winners in 2010, dominated the early part of the first period. But the Bruins, the 2011 champions, came on strong in the last 10 minutes and ended the period being outshot by only 10-9.

The Blackhawks won the opener 4-3 on Andrew Shaw's goal at 12:08 of the third overtime and lost 2-1 in Game 2 on Daniel Paille's goal at 13:48 of the first overtime.

Marian Hossa returned to the Blackhawks lineup after being a late scratch in Game 3 because of an upper body injury. He has three game-winning goals in the playoffs and was second on the team with 17 goals during the regular season.

Despite his return, Chicago's power-play woes continued. The Blackhawks were scoreless on their only first-period opportunity ? leaving them 0 for 12 in the series and 0 for the last 21.

Since the best-of-seven format for the Cup finals began in 1939, teams leading 2-1 have won the championship 38 of 47 times.

Boston has won its last seven home playoff games, outscoring opponents 21-10. The Bruins are 11-2 in their last 13 games with both losses coming in overtime.

Rask has allowed one goal or fewer in each of Boston's last eight wins.

Guardian: Snowden won't return voluntarily to US

WASHINGTON (AP) ? NSA leaker Edward Snowden defended his disclosure of top-secret U.S. spying programs in an online chat Monday with The Guardian and attacked U.S. officials for calling him a traitor.

"The U.S. government is not going to be able to cover this up by jailing or murdering me," he said. He added the government "immediately and predictably destroyed any possibility of a fair trial at home," by labeling him a traitor, and indicated he would not return to the U.S. voluntarily.

Congressional leaders have called Snowden a traitor for revealing once-secret surveillance programs two weeks ago in the Guardian and The Washington Post. The National Security Agency programs collect records of millions of Americans' telephone calls and Internet usage as a counterterror tool. The disclosures revealed the scope of the collections, which surprised many Americans and have sparked debate about how much privacy the government can take away in the name of national security.

"It would be foolish to volunteer yourself to" possible arrest and criminal charges "if you can do more good outside of prison than in it," he said.

Snowden dismissed being called a traitor by former Vice President Dick Cheney, who made the allegations in an interview this week on Fox News Sunday. Cheney was echoing the comments of both Democrats and Republican leadership on Capitol Hill, including Senate Intelligence committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein.

"Being called a traitor by Dick Cheney is the highest honor you can give an American, and the more panicked talk we hear from people like him, Feinstein ... the better off we all are," Snowden said.

The Guardian announced that its website was hosting an online chat with Snowden, in hiding in Hong Kong, with reporter Glenn Greenwald receiving and posting his questions. The Associated Press couldn't independently verify that Snowden was the man who posted 19 replies to questions.

In answer to the question of whether he fled to Hong Kong because he was spying for China, Snowden wrote, "Ask yourself: if I were a Chinese spy, why wouldn't I have flown directly into Beijing? I could be living in a palace petting a phoenix by now."

He added later, "I have had no contact with the Chinese government."

Snowden dismissed the U.S. government's claims that the NSA surveillance programs had helped thwart dozens of terrorist attacks in more than 20 countries, including the 2009 al-Qaida plot by Afghan American Najibullah Zazi to blow up New York subways.

"Journalists should ask a specific question: ... how many terrorist attacks were prevented SOLELY by information derived from this suspicionless surveillance that could not be gained via any other source? Then ask how many individual communications were ingested to acheive (sic) that, and ask yourself if it was worth it."

He added that "Bathtub falls and police officers kill more Americans than terrorism, yet we've been asked to sacrifice our most sacred rights for fear of falling victim to it."

Snowden was working as a contractor for NSA at the time he had access to the then-secret programs. He defended his actions and said he considered what to reveal and what not to, saying he did not reveal any U.S. operations against what he called legitimate military targets, but instead showed that the NSA is hacking civilian infrastructure like universities and private businesses.

"These nakedly, aggressively criminal acts are wrong no matter the target. Not only that, when NSA makes a technical mistake during an exploitation operation, critical systems crash," he said, though he gave no examples of what systems have crashed or in which countries.

"Congress hasn't declared war on the countries ? the majority of them are our allies ? but without asking for public permission, NSA is running network operations against them that affect millions of innocent people," he said. "And for what? So we can have secret access to a computer in a country we're not even fighting?"

Snowden was referring to Prism, one of the programs he disclosed. The program sweeps up Internet usage data from all over the world that goes through nine major U.S.-based Internet providers. The NSA can look at foreign usage without any warrants, and says the program doesn't target Americans.

U.S. officials say the data-gathering programs are legal and operated under secret court supervision.

Snowden explained his claim that from his desk, he could "wiretap" any phone call or email ? a claim top intelligence officials have denied. "If an NSA, FBI, CIA, DIA, etc. analyst has access to query raw SIGINT (signals intelligence) databases, they can enter and get results for anything they want," he wrote in the answer posted on the Guardian site. "Phone number, email, user id, cell phone handset id (IMEI), and so on ? it's all the same."

The NSA did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. But Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has said that the kind of data that can be accessed and who can access it is severely limited.

Snowden said the restrictions on what could be seen by an individual analyst vary according to policy changes, which can happen "at any time," and said that a technical "filter" on NSA data-gathering meant to filter out U.S. communications is "weak," such that U.S. communications often get ingested.

The former contractor also added that NSA provides Congress "with a special immunity to its surveillance," without explaining further.

Snowden defended U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Manning for his disclosures of documents to Wikileaks, which he called a "legitimate journalistic outlet," which "carefully redacted all of their releases in accordance with a judgment of public interest." He said the Wikileaks release of unredacted material was "due to the failure of a partner journalist to control a passphrase," which led to the charge against Manning that he dumped the documents, which Snowden called an attempt to smear Manning.

Manning is currently on trial at Fort Meade ? the same Army base where the NSA is headquartered ? on charges of aiding the enemy for releasing documents to Wikileaks.

Snowden defended his description of his salary as being $200,000 a year, calling that a "career high," but saying he did take a pay cut to take the job at Booz Allen Hamilton, where he worked as a contractor at an NSA facility in Hawaii. When Booz Allen fired him, they said his salary was $122,000.

In one of his final replies, Snowden attacked the "mainstream media" for its coverage, saying it "now seems far more interested in what I said when I was 17 or what my girlfriend looks like rather than, say, the largest program of suspicion-less surveillance in human history."

(AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin told President Barack Obama on Monday that their positions on Syria do not "coincide" but the two leaders said during the G-8 summit that they have a shared interest in stopping the violence that has ravaged the Middle Eastern country during a two-year-old civil war.

Obama acknowledged in a bilateral meeting with Putin in Northern Ireland that they have a "different perspective" on Syria but he said that both leaders wanted to address the fierce fighting and also wanted to secure chemical weapons in the country. The U.S. president said both sides would work to develop talks in Geneva aimed at ending the country's bloody civil war.

"We do have differing perspectives on the problem but we share an interest in reducing the violence, securing chemical weapons and ensuring that they're neither used nor are they subject to proliferation," Obama said. "We want to try to resolve the issue through political means if possible."

Putin said "of course our opinions do not coincide, but all of us have the intention to stop the violence in Syria and to stop the growth of victims and to solve the situation peacefully, including by bringing the parties to the negotiations table in Geneva. We agreed to push the parties to the negotiations table."

While Putin has called for negotiated peace talks, he has not urged Syrian President Bashar Assad to leave power, and he remains one of Assad's strongest political and military allies. The White House did not expect any breakthrough with Putin on Syria during the gathering of the Group of Eight Summit at a lakeside golf resort near Enniskillen and the meeting further highlighted the rift between the two countries on how to address the fighting in the country.

Obama announced Friday that the U.S. would start sending weaponry, while Britain and France remained concerned that the firepower might end up helping anti-democratic extremists linked to Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah militia. Putin has defended Russia's continuing supply of weapons to Assad's military.

At least 93,000 people have been killed in Syria's conflict since it erupted in March 2011, according to a recent U.N. estimate. Millions have been displaced.

The European Union has also allowed a weapons embargo against Syria to expire, allowing members of the 27-nation bloc to arm the rebels. France and Britain are moving in that direction, but the German government opposes such a move.

Assad warned that Europe "will pay a price" if it delivers weapons to rebels who are trying to topple his government. In an interview with the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Runschau published Monday, Assad dismissed the Obama administration's contention that the Syrian army used chemical weapons against the rebels.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said following a meeting with Putin on Sunday that the West needs to unite behind a diplomatic push that transitions Assad from power.

Obama's discussions with Putin capped a busy day that included a preview of future negotiations toward a broad trade deal with the European Union and speech in Belfast where he called peace in Northern Ireland a "blueprint" for those living amid conflict around the world.

Pointing to potential economic benefits, Obama said the U.S. would host the first round of negotiations on the trade deal with the European Union next month in Washington. The agreement aims to forge a free trade pact designed to slash tariffs, boost exports and fuel badly needed economic growth.

Obama predicted the parties would need to overcome sensitivities on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. While leaders would be giving strong mandates to their negotiators, Obama said he suspected the leaders themselves would need to intervene at certain points to work through hang-ups.

At the start of his European trip, Obama noted the progress of peace in Northern Ireland and summoned young people at Belfast's Waterfront Hall to take responsibility for their country's future, warning that there is "more to lose now than there's ever been."

"The terms of peace may be negotiated by political leaders, but the fate of peace is up to each of us," Obama said at the glass-fronted building, which would never have been built during the city's long era of car bombs.

This house is off Menauhant Road, just 2/10ths of a mile from the open vistas and soft sands of Menauhant Beach, with its view across the Sound to the Vineyard.

It?s a young house, with 4 bedrooms and 4 baths, and almost 3,000 square feet. With the requisite first floor main bedroom suite, open floor plan, vaulted ceilings, beautiful level and lush yard, and a small neighborhood of similar homes, this has all the comforts and conveniences buyers in this price range expect.

I think the $849,000 asking price is ?right on the money?, as the saying goes, for this home.
