Brain cancer is one of the most malignant forms of cancer known to humans today. However, researchers at Swedish?s Ivy Brain Tumor Center in Seattle are working hard to find new treatments. Dr. Greg Foltz, director of the Ivy Center says certain cells in tumors may provide clues to researchers searching for promising new treatment options within the next 5 years. Dr. Foltz is one of the world?s leading experts in brain cancer research and treatments. He is both a clinician and researcher who is on a mission to end brain cancer as we know it today. As part of this mission, he and his patients have organized an annual brain cancer walk in Seattle. The walk provides money to support this research. For example, money raised from the walk in 2009 went to fund research that explored whether cancer stem cells are the cause of drug resistance in patients. It enabled researchers to develop new techniques to isolate these cells and to study the molecular and genetic features of the cancer cells. The research holds promise. The study has received national attention and resulted in a highly competitive .2 million federal grant award to study and categorize these cancer stem cells and the vulnerabilities that could lead to new treatment approaches for patients. Awareness matters. For more information visit the brain cancer walk?s website online at www.BrainCancerWalk.org, or on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/BrainCancer.
