Android: Previously mentioned virtual mix tape site 8tracks has always been a great way to combine your favorite songs into a custom playlist and share it with your friends (or the rest of the 8tracks community) but up until now only iPhone users have had the benefit of an 8tracks app for their smartphones. 8tracks changed that yesterday with the launch of its new Android app, built from the ground up for music streaming and sharing.
If you're unfamiliar with 8tracks, the service allows you to create a social playlist of songs with 8 or more songs, pulled and organized from their huge database of tracks. Music reviewers like Pitchfork, Spin, and Rolling Stone contribute playlists, and the service promises a social music discovery experience that lets you discover music that real people think works together, as opposed to an algorithm.
8tracks fans have been able to use unofficial apps that leverage the 8tracks API for a while now, but the launch of an official 8tracks app means that you can search for music to listen to by tag (like "studying," "sleepy," "lonely," or "working"), genre, artist, style, even the mood you're in, to find a playlist that will work for you. Then just tap the playlist to start listening. If you find a playlist creator or DJ that you really like, you can follow them to see when they upload new playlists and browse others they've posted. 8tracks is a free service, and the Android app is available now in the Android market for devices running 2.1 or higher.
