It wasnt all that long ago that obesity and all of its complications were limited to adulthood. Over the last thirtyish years or so the situation in the US has changed definitely for the worse. In addition to more adults being overweight, children and teenagers are developing this condition at ever younger years. For kids the most influential people are their parents but standard awareness and education are also vital. The parents, though, are the ones who are responsible for offering the most guidance and being the most positive role models properly. Obese children are facing immediate threats to their mental and physical well being. If you go beyond that youll be able to see that there are a lot of dangerous health risks that can and most likely will surface later on. For kids, this is an awful one-two punch that is almost impossible to beat back and get over.
The obese child is on a terrible road heading toward terrible health problems. One, for example, is fatty liver disease which is perhaps the number one type of disease that affects the liver. A while ago most people figured that alcoholism and sclerosis were the primary causes of liver problems. However, we now know that it is long term obesity that most greatly affects fatty liver disease. Usually the thing that really makes the issue worse is that people who are obese have severely dysfunctional metabolisms. The liver helps with detoxifying the body of anything that is not good for it. This puts a major demand upon the bodily systems of kids and teens who are obese.
Perhaps the oldest expression out there is that children are cruel to each other. Perhaps most of us have experienced that truism when we were younger. Obese children are quite a lot more likely to be forced to endure cruelty in the form of verbal humiliation and teasing. The fact that most of the kids survive all of those years of school without losing their minds is a miracle. We all understand that that kind of long lasting abuse can have severe consequences later on. The constant assault can have a major impact on things like the childrens self esteem and confidence, etc.
Scientists are trying to prove that, more so in girls than in boys, childhood obesity can play a role in early onset puberty. Of course, there is a fair amount of common sense involved in looking at what we know already. For example, we know that kids who are obese and overweight grow faster and enter puberty earlier. This still, though, requires a clearer determination of causality than currently exists. Obviously early onset puberty is not as terrible a threat as other conditions that are related to childhood obesity but there can be implications that accompany the abnormally young age for puberty to set in for these kids. The real issue of obesity in young kids and teens is something that will affect everyone. It is also important to look at this from the viewpoint of cost to the overall society. Kids who are obese are probably going to grow up into adults who are obese and that means that they will have to deal with things like medical costs, etc. This makes obesity societys problem though most people dont see it that way.
