How to Process Credit Cards From Customers as a Home-Party ...

Author: Steve Dowell

Many people become consultants or independent contractors of a home-party, direct sales company as their primary source of income or to supplement their family income.? These companies allow individuals to become independent business owners, selling products or services primarily through home parties. They ask friends and family to ?host? a party in their homes, inviting people over to sample goodies, view products and shop from a catalog. When you are running a business that sells products in other people?s homes or at vendor fairs, how can you process credit cards from your customers?

Credit Card Processing Options for Direct Sales Consultants

If you are a direct sales consultant, there?s a good chance you have the ability to process credit cards through your company. They may have a system that allows you to record credit card information from each of your customers on an order form, and then you enter it when placing your order on the computer or over the phone after you return home from your party.

There are a few disadvantages of processing credit cards with this method ? primarily, it?s a safety concern to travel around with customer credit card information just hand written on order forms. If you ever lost one and they got into the wrong hands, someone could use your customer information fraudulently to place orders online or by phone.

Another disadvantage is when you place a customer order and discover the credit card is declined for whatever reason. You have to then get back into contact with each customer whose credit card was declined to arrange for a different payment method.

Process Credit Cards in Real-Time at the Direct Sales Party Location

A better method for processing credit cards is to use a system that processes cards in real-time. This means you will know when you enter the card details or swipe the card through a card reader whether or not the card has funds to pay for the order. Since it is not practical to carry a cash register and credit card reader with you from party to party, you will probably want to look at mobile credit card processing options, like the Square reader or PayPal Here; or the use of an internet-based credit card processor.

Mobile credit card processing allows you to swipe your customer?s credit card and ensure the payment will go through. The funds are deposited into your bank account or PayPal account (depending on the service you use to accept credit cards) and can then be used to pay for your customer orders through your direct sales company.? The difference between what your customers pay you and what it costs you to buy the products from your direct sales company are your profits.

An internet-based credit card processor can be used with a laptop or iPad (or any device with internet access). Typically, this type of credit card processor will give you a website to log into and enter customer credit card details into a form. Once the payment is processed, the money is transferred to your bank account.

Crowd welcomes home national champion Baylor

WACO, Texas (AP) ? These are heady times at Baylor.

A few months ago, quarterback Robert Griffin III became Baylor's first Heisman Trophy winner. In March, the men's basketball team advanced to the NCAA round of 16 for the second time in three years. Together, those two teams won 40 games and lost 11 over this year.

Fundraising efforts are going gangbusters and applications to enroll are up.

And then there are the Lady Bears, Kim Mulkey's women's basketball team that just went 40-0 to win the program's second NCAA championship. Player of the year Brittany Griner led the way to an 80-61 rout Tuesday night against Notre Dame.

And all five starters are expected back next season.

Some 2,000 people turned out Wednesday at the Ferrell Center ? Baylor's home arena, where the Lady Bears won 19 games this season and have gone 184-19 during Mulkey's 12 years at the school ? to welcome the team back to Waco after its championship game win in Denver.

"You do not win championships with one player, two players," Mulkey told the crowd. "You need five, six, seven, eight people heading the same direction. I told them in the locker room after the game, many hours after the game when we were still there: 'Any one of you can go to another university and play 40 minutes a game and average double figures, but you would not have gotten this trophy right here.'

"And I tell you what: You better get your tickets to New Orleans. See you next year."

Mulkey and her team made it clear from the start of the season that a national championship was their goal, and they seem to be saying the same thing for next season as well.

"I can't even think about next year, but we're going to be good," she said in a news conference after the public celebration. "The expectations are there. Had we not won the national championship this year, the expectations would be there. And we're going to embrace it. We're going to do that very humbly, not arrogantly. We're going to do it with a sense of appreciation for what we did this year. We like the way it feels. We want to do it again."

Mukley received a congratulatory phone call from President Barack Obama earlier Wednesday. The President picked the Lady Bears to win the national championship before the tournament started.

Not exactly a bold pick. Baylor was No. 1 from the start of the season to the finish.

Mulkey (coach of the year) and Griner led the way to this year's title. Griner, though she's the star of the Baylor squad and the face of women's college basketball right now, was quick to acknowledge that it was not a one-woman show.

"It definitely takes more than me to win a national championship. You can't do this by yourself," she said.

Baylor president Ken Starr called the past several months "epic," ending with Tuesday's win.

"You combine that with men's basketball and 30 wins. And go back to football with the Heisman. Now we have the Wade Trophy, the Heisman of women's basketball. Are we thankful? Are we grateful?" he said.

As Mulkey stepped to the podium, she was rushed by several members of the Noze Brothers, an underground fraternity at Baylor. They made Mulkey, and all the members of the basketball team, honorary Noze Brothers and even asked Mulkey to autograph a football.

"She has very nice penmanship," one Noze brother said over the microphone.

All of Baylor's sports teams, men and women, have qualified for the postseason so far this academic year, and the 400-plus athletes on campus had a combined 3.16 GPA last fall. And before Griner grabbed the spotlight, it was Griffin on the gridiron last fall.

Griffin, who got his political science degree in three years, set or tied 54 school records in 41 games and led the Bears to only the second 10-win season in their 112 years of football. They had never even had a winning record in the Big 12 before RG3 arrived with coach Art Briles, who was at Wednesday's celebration; Griffin was in Denver to cheer on the Lady Bears in person. He even helped cut down a net.

School officials have noted there were more than 40,000 applications for the upcoming fall semester for only about 3,000 freshman spots. That's up from 15,458 applicants for the Fall 2005 class, right after the Lady Bears won their first national title. More than $250 million in new athletic and academic facilities have been added in the past decade, and another $120 million in capital improvements are under way.

The Bear Foundation, the primary fundraising arm supporting the school's 19 athletic programs, contributed nearly $7.7 million for scholarship support during the 2010-11 academic year. It was the seventh consecutive year with a record total.

There are also plans for a new campus football stadium for the school of 15,000. The family of former Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane Jr., a 1958 Baylor grad and former regents chairman, recently gave the school the largest capital gift ever ? more than $20 million ? for the stadium the school hopes to have for the 2014 season.

For now, Mulkey can celebrate and recover from her recent diagnosis of Bell's palsy, which can cause a partial facial paralysis. And she can take comfort in knowing she will have a strong team coming back. She recalled last year's loss to eventual national champion Texas A&M in the NCAA tournament.

"Last year, on that ride home from Dallas, Brittney Griner texted me, from the back of the bus to the front of the bus, 'Coach, we won't ever let you down again,'" she said.

And they haven't.

HBT: Pettitte shuts down Mets in spring debut

Andy Pettitte took the mound for an inning against the Mets in his spring debut Wednesday and retired three of the four hitters he faced, allowing just a single in the process.

?It felt good to be able to get out there and get the inning in, especially in a big league game? he said. ?It definitely felt a little weird, there?s no doubt about it. Once I got out there, it was just like you never left. It was fun.?

Pettitte received a standing ovation while coming out to pitch the sixth inning. Prospect Cory Vaughn led off the frame with a hit, but Pettitte was able to work around it.

?Obviously, anytime you get fans to cheer for you, that?s a good thing,? he said. ?It?s all coming back. I feel like the stuff is there. I just have to build stamina.?

Pettitte, attempting a comeback after a brief one-year retirement, ?is expected to spend the next month working his way through the Yankees? minor league system. If all goes well, he could join the rotation at the beginning of May.

Home Improvement Companies | House Improvements

Home improvement companies have grown increasingly in demand for a number of reasons. First of all, the recession saw a lot of home improvement projects being undertaken by home owners. The reason for this is that there were fewer home buyers, therefore homeowners decided to invest time and money into their homes. This is a long term plan which makes such investment a prudent one.

As a result, home improvement has become a huge niche which has grown past the DIY stage, when it was just a hobby. Different areas of the house are being tackled in home improvement projects to add value to the house and as investments in the houses. Homeowners have therefore realized the benefit of having these projects professionally and expertly handled.

Home improvement companies are varied and are as wide as the niche itself.

They range from the architects and interior designers who are involved in the planning of a home improvement project, to those that provide such services as remodeling, painting and plumbing. Then there are the companies that provide the materials needed for a home improvement projects. Some companies combine all these functions into their services so that they serve as a one-stop shop for all things home improvement.

If you decide to make use of a home improvement company that provides all your home improvement needs, you need to make sure that all their contractors have current licenses to operate within the area your home is located.

Also, it is always best to purchase the materials you need for your home improvement projects from a reputable home improvement company.

If that company has a reputation for quality materials in the industry, you are very likely to get the best materials and advice from them. They are conversant with the different types of materials and their functions and can advice you appropriately. Furthermore, because of their reputation, they are more likely to have a really good warranty program should anything go wrong with your materials.

Most home improvement companies will give you a free estimate before you begin your home improvement project. This is very important when you are planning your project because home improvement projects are notorious for becoming increasingly expensive as you go on if you fail to plan and have an estimate in the first place.

It is easy to think that home improvement should be a DIY project and if you have some experience in handling DIY projects, this is not a bad thing. However, using a home improvement company could save you time and money, which you could lose from mistakes you might make along the way. If you are willing to make the mistakes and learn as you go, home improvement companies will also come in handy with advice and quality products.

Shut Down Windows 8 from the Charm Bar

If you have given the Consumer Preview of Windows 8 a spin or you're running the latest version of Windows 8 you will find that shutting down your PC may not be as straightforward as it was before.

With the Start button gone, the option to shut down your PC by navigating to the Shut Down button from the Start Menu is no longer available.

Instead, Microsoft introduced a new method and menu to shut down your PC using touch and a couple of shortcuts. In this guide I will show you how to shut down Windows 8 using the Charm Bar.

Use the Charm Bar to Shut Down Windows 8

1. Move the mouse pointer to the right corner of the screen, doing this will cause the Charm bar to appear on the right side (akin to the Start Menu). Click the Settings icon to view additional options.

Note: You can also press the Windows key + C to bring up the Charm Bar or you can swipe to the left on the screen if you are using a touch screen to bring up the Charm Bar.

2. Click the Power icon and then click Shut down from the menu that appears.

Note: You can also restart the Windows 8 PC or put it to sleep from this same menu.

Shutting Down May Take Longer with Non-Touch Devices

It may seem a bit cumbersome and may not make a whole lot of sense compared to previous versions of Windows, but the idea here is to use touch to facilitate interaction with Windows 8.

With the focus on tablet computers and the demand for PC-like functionality on a tablet it makes a whole lot of sense for Microsoft to move in this direction.

Now that you know how to Shut Down your Windows 8 PC make sure you check out how you could make this process a lot simpler.
