Hubble portrays a dusty spiral galaxy

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has provided another outstanding image of a nearby galaxy -- NGC 4183, seen with a beautiful backdrop of distant galaxies and nearby stars. Located about 55 million light-years from the sun and spanning about eighty thousand light-years, NGC 4183 is a little smaller than the Milky Way. This galaxy, which belongs to the Ursa Major Group, lies in the northern constellation of Canes Venatici (The Hunting Dogs).

NGC 4183 is a spiral galaxy with a faint core and an open spiral structure. Unfortunately, this galaxy is viewed edge-on from Earth, and we cannot fully appreciate its spiral arms. But we can admire its galactic disk.

The disks of galaxies are mainly composed of gas, dust and stars. There is evidence of dust over the galactic plane, visible as dark intricate filaments that block the visible light from the core of the galaxy. In addition, recent studies suggest that this galaxy may have a bar structure. Galactic bars are thought to act as a mechanism that channels gas from the spiral arms to the center, enhancing star formation, which is typically more pronounced in the spiral arms than in the bulge of the galaxy.

British astronomer William Herschel first observed NGC 4183 on 14 January 1778.

This picture was created from visible and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.4 arcminutes wide.

This image uses data identified by Luca Limatola in the Hubble's Hidden Treasures image processing competition.

Explosive Attack on Kenya Church Kills 1 Child

The acting police chief in Kenya's capital says an explosive device set off in a Sunday school class killed one child and seriously wounded three.

Moses Ombati said he suspects sympathizers with the Somali militant group al-Shabab were behind the attack at an Anglican church in Nairobi.

Kenya has seen a series of attacks on churches ever since Kenyan forces moved into Somalia to fight al-Shabab last year. Kenyan forces kicked the rebels out of their last stronghold, Kismayo, on Friday.

Grenades are often used in the attacks; Ombati is describing the cause of Sunday's attack as an explosive device.

One church member, Julius Macharia Maina, brought four children to the hospital. One child's head was cut open; the others had bruises. Maina described the attack "emotional and very scary."

HBT: Yankees squander chances vs. Jays

The Yankees fell to the Blue Jays 3-2 this afternoon at Rogers Centre in Toronto, which means the Orioles could move into a tie for first place in the American League East with a win over the Red Sox tonight.

The Yankees had plenty of chances to blow this game open, but simply failed to take advantage. They loaded the bases against Ricky Romero in the first inning, but only managed a pair of sacrifice flies. The leadoff hitter reached base in each of the next four innings, but none of them came around to score.

Romero left the game after three innings with left knee discomfort, but Shawn Hill came up big by tossing three scoreless frames in his first appearance in the majors since 2010. He also got the victory.

Andy Pettitte allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings for his first loss since returning from a fractured ankle. The veteran southpaw was pulled with two runners on in the sixth before Adeiny Hechavarria delivered a go-ahead RBI double off Joba Chamberlain. Yan Gomes was caught napping around third base on the very same play, but the Yankees couldn?t get anything going against Brad Lincoln, Steve Delabar and Casey Janssen.

The Yankees will send Phil Hughes to the hill tomorrow while Henderson Alvarez pitches for the Jays. If the American League East ends in a tie, there will be a one-game playoff on Thursday in Baltimore.

Flyy Friday: Lotus Love Beauty Product Line | For Colored Gurls

Nikia Pope, one of our fabulous guest bloggers, has decided to get on the path to making her dreams a reality: She is starting her own business.

She transitioned from permed to natural hair in June 2011, and with that transition, Nikia?s interest in natural hair care and natural skincare products peeked in a major way. Because she was so intrigued by this transition, Nikia began to make all her own hair and skincare products. So, her passion project,?Lotus Love, was born! Check out FCG?s interview with her below to learn about this up-and-coming line:

Why did you create Lotus Love Beauty Product Line?
I have been a part of the post-college time for a year+, and like most of my fellow graduates, I am feeling the brunt of not being able to find employment, which can be so discouraging and can also take a toll on you. But instead of choosing defeat, I chose faith, faith that God was continuously working behind the scenes on my behalf, lining up things for me. I had applied to several jobs, some of which I knew I was supposed to have, yet I didn?t get them. I took that as a sign from God that He had something better for me, He revealed to me that I was supposed to be a business owner; you know, taking my destiny into my own hands. I shuddered at the thought first, but over this last year, God has constantly been building me up, equipping me with the necessary tools that I need to succeed. Most importantly, He has been working on me internally, for I believe that that is where most of the work is needed in any person, versus the external, which so many people focus on. Your external is a reflection of your internal. So you have to get your inside right, first. Helping me to narrow and focus my priorities, working on my self-esteem and my self-worth, building my confidence and helping me to eliminate FEAR, once I had addressed all those defeating thoughts, habits and issues, I had a peace inside about me that simply said, ?It?s time, GO,? and I have proceeded to move forward. I won?t look back.

Originally,?Lotus Love?was going to be called something else. I had to come up with a name that I was totally in love with, and after filing paperwork with the Secretary of State office, I was informed that the name had already been registered in the state of Georgia. I was crushed. Devastation set in. I was discouraged. This was what I wanted. But God, He had something better in mind for me. I went into prayer about it and asked God to direct me to what was for me. One day, while reading Queen Afua?s?Sacred Woman book, it was a paragraph that described the original Lotus People, which are black people. It read: ?We are the original Lotus People, sweet, beautiful, illuminating, spiritual, and compassionate. A being a pure light who evolves out of the mud of challenge, where the lotus seed is fertilized, and grows upward to blossom into a wondrously beautiful soul of light.??I paused. This was me, this is who I am. How could a person who doesn?t know me personally speak to the core of who I am, in just a few words? It was powerful. I had peace about it. I knew that this was the answer to my prayer. I knew that anything I created was going to be a labor of love for me, and ultimately, I want to spread and share more love, that?s what fuels me. There you have, LotusLove.

How did you become interested in beauty and beauty products?
My interest in creating beauty products developed out of a desire for affordability. Since I was a newly natural, I wanted to experiment with products, and trust me when I tell you that natural hair care is NOT cheap. I started watching videos and reading the ingredients on the back of the products I was using, and I noticed a lot of common ingredients in the products. I researched each ingredient and proceeded to buy all the common ingredients, and I headed for the kitchen; the love affair had begun. I also wanted to be in control of what I was putting on my body. I started discovering that a lot of things I was using had a lot of harmful chemicals in them, so I threw them all out and got to mixing.

What kind of products will your provide?
Lotus Love will provide products for hair, skin, bath and even babies, something for everybody.

I have been creating products for one year now, testing everything out on myself and my family and friends. They are happy guinea pigs (can you say free products?). My favorite to make is my shea butter whip and my lavender liquid black soap; they are simply divine.

What do you think makes your product line unique?
I think that my uniqueness comes from the fact that I grow a lot of the herbs I use in my own garden. I only create products that I would actually use, testing all the products on my own body.

How is your beauty regimen reflected in LotusLove?
I only use products that I create on my own skin. I wanted products that were going to aid in the overall health of my body, as well as treat any issues I was having with either my face, skin or health. I wanted to feel good about the products I was using, and after much research, I came to the conclusion that many popular products out did not do that; they had all these ingredients inside them that I couldn?t even pronounce. (I am sure that a lot of women have had that moment, when you are trying to sound out those big, obnoxious words listed under ingredients. Lol if you haven?t, go and look at the back of any products that you use regularly). Then, I had an A-ha moment, ?Why am I using products with ingredients that I can?t even pronounce?? Doesn?t make much sense, so I stopped. A lot of the products I previously used left my skin feeling so dry, tight and un-moisturized, I actually felt like my skin was stressed. I was spending all this money on these products, and I was not satisfied with the results. It was a no-brainer: Stop using them. Now, in the absence of these products, I had to use something, but what? And this is how I started creating my own products. Who knew better than me what I was looking for in a product? A year later, my skin is the BEST it has ever been; I get compliments on my skin every single day, confirmation that I made the right choice.

Who and what inspires you?
Life inspires me.

There is no golden answer to the question, ?What inspires you?? I find inspiration in more things than I can count. Inspiration comes to me in so many different ways from people to nature. I am in a constant state of inspiration. Life inspires me; the mere fact that I woke up today inspires me and fuels me to be better, create better, think better, live better. Even if today isn?t perfect, I know that today has purpose. I am inspired by people who live life on their own terms, and go get the very things they pray for. I am the most inspired by strong, black women who are defying the odds and stereotypes every day, including you, Jamie.

Why do you think people should contribute to your business project?
I am following my intuition and my dreams. It takes guts and bravery to go after what you want. Sacrificing who I am for what I shall be. My ultimate goal is to be able to provide employment for others; I believe in giving more than receiving. This business project is an extension of who I am?come share with me.

What advice do you have for young women who may need courage in pursuing their dreams?
Get alone with God and see His purpose for your life; your dreams should always align with your purpose, morals and values. Be careful who you share your dreams with because there are a lot of undercover dream killers out there, not wanting you to achieve your dreams because they were too chicken shxt to pursue their own; they let fear consume them. It would be easy because you have stretched in ways you have never imagined, you will be tested to see if you want it as bad as you say you do.

Always remember that your actions should align with what you speak. Each day, dedicate some time, even if it?s 30 minutes, to pursuing your dreams, [and] before you know it, it will be tangible. Know that anything worth having requires hard work. Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life that you have imagined for so long; it is very possible if you believe. You must FIRST see it to believe it. A goal is an intellectual concept ? can you see it? Cause if you can?t see it within, then you?re never going to accomplish it. What?s your vision? The vision will pull you forward. The goal will keep you busy.

Your donations to Nikia?s Lotus Love campaign will go toward business registration, jars, bottles, branding and marketing and more! Learn more about the campaign and contribute here.?

Chez Cayenne: The Bye and Bye (a copycat drink recipe)

The Bye and Bye is a cute little tavern in Portland, Oregon with a short menu of delicious vegan food. We ate there this summer when we were visiting family.

To go with my meatball sandwich, I ordered the house signature drink, the Bye and Bye.? The bartender filled a mason jar with ice, added a couple of shots of liquor, some juice, and a squirt of something from the soda gun. I loved it. The drink is fruity, but not cloyingly sweet. When I finished it, I decided that I wanted to make them at home.

When I got home, I couldn't find a recipe for a Bye and Bye, so I had to get creative. The menu said it contained peach infused bourbon and vodka. I don't have flavor-infused liquors, usually, and didn't want to buy any, so I used regular bourbon and vodka and some peach schnapps. Then I had to figure out the juice. I tasted cranberry juice and guessed that the soda was ginger ale.

I mixed it all up, and it tasted right, but the color wasn't pink enough. I tried adding some pomegranate molasses. Whoops, my drink was now brown. I thought about using some grenadine, but then I remembered that we used to make pink lemonade with grape juice when I was a kid, so I added some grape juice concentrate. Pinkness was achieved.

I've been drinking these on weekends ever since. This is a great drink anytime, but it's especially nice right now as the last heavy days of late summer ease into the crispness of fall.

Disclaimer: I only had one of these and I'm working from memory, so I might not have the juice ingredients exactly right (the liberties I took with the liquor was on purpose), and the color of mine is a little deeper than the original, as I recall. The flavor is spot on, I believe. But if you've had this drink and have any suggestions as to how I can make it closer to the original, leave me a comment!

A Pitcher of Bye and Byes

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons vodka (3 ounces)

1/4 cup bourbon (2 ounces)

1/4 cup peach liqueur (2 ounces)

1 cup ginger ale

2 cups cranberry juice

2 tablespoons? purple grape juice concentrate (or 1/2 cup grape juice)

Mix all ingredients in a 1 quart pitcher. Pour over ice into 4 juice glasses or 2 large mason jars.

Makes 2 tavern-sized drinks or 4 regular ones.

No tax, no blessing: German church insists on levy

BERLIN (AP) ? The road to heaven is paved with more than good intentions for Germany's 24 million Catholics. If they don't pay their religious taxes, they will be denied sacraments, including weddings, baptisms and funerals.

A decree issued last week by the country's bishops cast a spotlight on the longstanding practice in Germany and a handful of other European countries in which governments tax registered believers and then hand over the money to the religious institutions.

In Germany, Catholics, Protestants and Jews pay a surcharge of up to nine percent on their income tax bills ? or about ?56 ($72) a month for a single person earning a pre-tax monthly salary of about ?3,500 ($4,500).

For religious institutions, struggling to maintain their congregations in a secular society where the Protestant Reformation began 500 years ago, the tax revenues are vital.

The Catholic Church in Germany receives about ?5 billion ($6.5 billion) annually from the surcharge. For Protestants, the total is just above ?4 billion ($5.2 billion). Donations, in turn, represent a far smaller share of the churches' income than in the United States.

With rising prices and economic uncertainty, however, more and more Catholics and Protestants are opting to save their money and declare to tax authorities they are no longer church members, even if they still consider themselves believers.

"I quit the church already in 2007," Manfred Gonschor, a Munich-based IT-consultant, said. "It was when I got a bonus payment and realized that I could have paid myself a nice holiday alone on the amount of church tax that I was paying on it."

Gonschor added he was also "really fed up with the institution and its failures."

Such defections have hit the Catholic Church especially hard ? it has lost about 181,000 tax-paying members in 2010 and 126,000 a year later, according to official figures. Protestants, who number about 24 million nationwide, lost 145,000 registered members in Germany in 2010, the most recent year from which figures are available.

But the figures include some people who still want to baptize their children, take communion on major religious holidays, marry in a religious ceremony and receive Christian burials.

The group We are Church, which claims to represent tens of thousands of grassroots Catholics, said many Germans stop paying the tax because they disagree with the church's policies or simply want to save money ? not because they have lost their faith.

"I haven't quit because I still think that I might want to get married in a church one day, even though I know that's absurd," said Anna Ainsley, a 31-old-year banker and a Protestant from Frankfurt. "But when I see my tax declaration, then I think every year that I should finally quit."

Those are the people that Germany's Catholic bishops had in mind when they decreed on Sept. 20 that stopping the payment of religious taxes was "a serious lapse" and those who did so would then be excluded from a range of church activities.

"This decree makes clear that one cannot partly leave the Church," the bishops said in a statement. "It is not possible to separate the spiritual community of the Church from the institutional Church."

Wavering Catholics will now be sent letters reminding them of the consequences of avoiding the church tax, including losing access to all sacraments.

"Maybe you haven't considered the consequences of your decision and would like to reverse this step," a draft of the letter states.

Protestants have taken a less stern position, saying non-taxpayers are still welcome to attend services and take communion. But becoming a godparent, getting married in a church or taking a job in church-affiliated institutions such as hospitals or kindergartens are off-limits to those who stop paying their taxes.

Switzerland and Austria also tax Catholic and Protestant church members. In Denmark, the State Lutheran church collects a tax from its members. Members of Sweden's Lutheran Church pay around 1 percent of their income, collected by the national tax authorities, just as in Finland.

In Italy, tax-payers have the choice of diverting a small part of their income taxes to religious institutions, including the Catholic Church and the country's Jewish community, but the contribution is voluntary.

In none of those countries have the churches taken such a firm stand against dropouts.

So far German courts have stood by the bishops' decision. This week the country's top administrative court threw out a lawsuit against the archdiocese of Freiburg by retired theologian Hartmut Zapp, who has spent years fighting the Catholic Church over the tax.

Zapp argued that a Catholic should be free to stop paying but remain a member of the spiritual community and that his religious beliefs could not possibly be tied to a tax payment.

The archdiocese responded in a statement that "those who lack solidarity bid farewell to the community of believers."

The tax issue presents moral and ethical dilemmas to millions of German believers, even dividing couples.

Sonja Trott, a 34-year-old teacher from Munich, said she quit the Catholic Church 15 years ago because she no longer believed in its teachings.

"Now I'd like to convince my husband that he also should quit, that would save us a lot of money," she said.

But her husband, Christoph, a sales executive, says he cannot imagine refusing to pay on moral grounds because it would seem like a betrayal of his faith. "I don't like paying it, but I do because I fear the step of quitting the church."

He would prefer to donate part of the money to charities "but well, in Germany the payment determines whether I'm allowed to consider myself a Catholic or not."

For other Germans, it's unethical to stop paying the tax but continue to use the church when it suits them.

Christine Solf, a Munich-based consultant, says she doesn't attend services regularly but appreciates the church's charitable work. For her, church membership is also a family tradition.

"I know people who quit for financial reasons but then still want their children to be baptized. That's not OK in my opinion," she said.

Asia stocks up after Spain pledges to cut spending

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Friday after Spain announced severe budget cuts meant to show international lenders and investors that the country is making progress toward getting its debt under control.

The Spanish government on Thursday unveiled a draft budget for 2013 that cuts overall spending by ?40 billion ($51 billion). Wall Street spurted higher on the news.

Stocks were also helped by speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.3 percent to 20,825.01. South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.3 percent to 1,993.44 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.1 percent to 4,388.90.

But Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.3 percent to 8,919.44, sinking on a government report that showed industrial production fell a further 1.3 percent in August.

Weak global and domestic demand is weighing on manufacturers, particularly electronics makers, who are facing intense competition from South Korean, Taiwanese and other Asian manufacturers. The strong yen, which erodes overseas earnings and makes Japanese-made products relatively more expensive, is also eating into profits.

Wall Street stocks posted their first gain of the week, despite mixed data on the U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.5 percent to 13,485.97. The S&P 500 index rose 1 percent to 1,447.15. The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.4 percent to 3,136.60.

The U.S. government said the overall economy grew at a slower annual rate in the April-through-June quarter than it previously estimated. Companies cut orders for durable goods last month. But the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 46 cents to $92.31 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.87 to finish at $91.85 on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2936 from $1.2917 late Thursday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.52 yen from 77.62 yen.

2 more Somali journalists murdered; 1 is beheaded

(AP) ? One Somali journalist was shot dead by gunmen on Friday while a second journalist was beheaded and his body dumped in the street, officials and residents said, two attacks that bring the number of Somali journalists killed this year to 15.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the latest killings, but the deaths fit into a year-long pattern of targeted attacks against Somali journalists. Reporters must watch for attacks from militants and criminals and know that such deaths have been met with judicial inaction in a capital city with crippled government institutions.

Residents in an area just north of Mogadishu discovered the headless dead body of Abdirahman Mohamed Ali, a 26-year-old sports writer with his hands tied behind his back on Thursday. His body also showed signs of torture. No previous killing of a journalist has involved a beheading, and the method of death could be an indication that al-Qaida-linked militants from al-Shabab were responsible.

"His decapitated body was dumped near a restaurant. We were shocked to see his severed head placed on his chest," Ahmed Abdinur, a resident in the restive Suqa Holaha area, said by phone. "We don't know who beheaded him, but our village has seen several such headless bodies before."

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed Ahmed Abdulahi Fanah, a 32-year-old reporter who was working for the Yemeni news agency, the Somali journalists union said Friday. He was shot and killed as he walked out of his home on the way to work, it said.

The killings have made going to work a life-and-death decision for Somali journalists. One female television journalist said she won't risk her life any longer.

"I have decided to leave the country because the time we expected would bring peace and liberty has turned into the worst we have ever seen," Sahra Abdulahi Isse said. "The death threats have increased. ... I will be leaving for Uganda for my own safety."

Most of the 15 deaths appear to have been targeted killings, though last week three journalists were killed when a suicide bomber detonated explosives in a cafe popular with journalists and politicians. The day after that attack gunmen shot and killed another journalist.

Most of the killings have taken place in areas of Mogadishu nominally under the Somali government's control. Despite government promises of prosecutions, no arrests have yet been made for any of the killings in 2012.

"The terrible killings of two more journalists within the space of 36 hours makes clear that tackling the culture of impunity surrounding such atrocities can no longer wait," said Leslie Lefkow, deputy Africa director at Human Rights Watch. "The new president should make investigating the killings a priority, today."

Napiergrass: A potential biofuel crop for the sunny Southeast

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? A grass fed to cattle throughout much of the tropics may become a biofuel crop that helps the nation meet its future energy needs, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientist.

Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum) is fairly drought-tolerant, grows well on marginal lands, and filters nutrients out of runoff in riparian areas, according to William Anderson, a geneticist in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Crop Genetics and Breeding Research Unit in Tifton, Ga. ARS is USDA's principal intramural scientific research agency, and this research supports the USDA priority of developing new sources of bioenergy.

Government mandates call for production of up to 36 billion gallons of biofuel by 2022. While much of that will come from grain ethanol, 21 billion gallons is expected to be derived from other crop-based feedstocks.

As part of a nationwide search for alternatives, Anderson and his colleagues compared napiergrass with several other candidate feedstocks in a study to see how they would fare in head-to-head competition. The researchers grew energy cane, napiergrass, switchgrass and giant reed for four years and compared biomass yields and soil nutrient requirements.

Joseph Knoll, a post-doctoral researcher in Anderson's laboratory, led the research effort. The team included Timothy Strickland and Robert Hubbard, ARS scientists with the agency's Southeast Regional Watershed Research Unit in Tifton, and Ravindra Malik of Albany State University in Albany, Ga.

With sunny skies and long growing seasons, farms and forests in the Southeastern United States are expected to play a major role in providing biofuel crops. The researchers' findings, along with others, show that napiergrass could be a viable biofuel crop in the Southeast's southern tier. It is not as cold-tolerant as switchgrass, but does offer advantages, such as continuing to produce biomass until the first frost. The research results have been published in BioEnergy Research.

The researchers are continuing to study napiergrass with an eye toward improving yields, usable fiber content, and disease resistance. They are also evaluating production systems that use chicken litter, synthetic fertilizer, and winter cover crops, as well as different irrigation levels, harvest times and planting dates. Preliminary findings in those studies show yields are sufficient without irrigation, and that there is little difference in yield when poultry litter is used instead of synthetic fertilizers.

BALTIMORE - The regular NFL officials returned to action, and the ending of their first game was eerily familiar to the one that hastened the exit of the replacement refs.

This time, however, there were no replays or arguments at the end. Just another win by the Baltimore Ravens over the Cleveland Browns, 23-16 on Thursday night.

If not for two failed desperation passes into the end zone in the closing seconds, the returning officials might have had to work overtime on their first night back.

Cleveland began its final drive with 1:05 to go on its own 10. Rookie Brandon Weeden moved the Browns to the Baltimore 33 before a fourth-down pass into the end zone fell incomplete. But a personal foul penalty on Baltimore linebacker Paul Kruger gave winless Cleveland one more chance.

That pass sailed out of the end zone.

"Too much juice," Weeden lamented.

The final sequence was not unlike the controversial ending of Monday night's Green Bay-Seattle game, when a Hail Mary pass was ruled a touchdown. That play, and the furor it created, hastened negotiations that brought the regular officials back.

The lockout ended late Wednesday, bringing about the exit of the unpopular replacement refs. And so, finally, the tenured officials were in place for Week 4.

"I felt so bad for that Green Bay situation," Ravens running back Ray Rice said. "Replacement refs, their families, I can't knock them. The scrutiny they were under. That kind of scrutiny is bad. It's hard going from like Pop Warner to the big leagues."

As they walked onto the field hours before this game, the officiating crew received a round of applause and shouts of encouragement from fans in the lower sections. Head linesman Wayne Mackie and line judge Jeff Seeman both tipped their caps to acknowledge the support.

And then, before the pregame coin flip, referee Gene Steratore greeted the players at midfield by saying, "Good evening, men, it's good to be back."

Many in the sellout crowd of 70,944 stood and roared their approval.

Afterward, Ravens coach John Harbaugh echoed the sentiment of the crowd.

"Welcome back to the officials. Good to have them back," he said. "These guys are really good. The communication was good. I didn't agree with every call, but they were excellent."

Joe Flacco went 28 for 46 for 356 yards, threw one touchdown and ran for another. Yet, it wasn't until Cary Williams returned an interception 63 yards for a score at the end of the third quarter that the Ravens (3-1) put some distance between themselves and the young Browns (0-4).

"I thought our secondary made plays that had to be made, especially at the end there when they were knocking at the door," Harbaugh said. "Cary Wiliams was the difference in the game with the interception return for a touchdown."

The fans waited until the third quarter to boo the officials. On a 13-yard completion from Weeden to Benjamin Watson, Ravens safety Bernard Pollard was called for a helmet-to-helmet hit. The crowd jeered the call, but replays appeared to confirm the penalty.

The 15-yard markoff set up a 51-yard field goal by Phil Dawson that got the Browns within 16-10.

Late in the quarter, Williams ambushed an out pattern by Travis Benjamin and took the interception down the right sideline for a 13-point lead.

It was the 13th consecutive home win for the Ravens, the longest current run in the NFL, and their streak of 10 straight wins in the division is also the most of any team. Baltimore has also won nine straight over Cleveland.

Anquan Boldin caught nine passes for 131 yards, and Torrey Smith had six catches for 97 yards and a score.

Weeden went 25 for 52 for 320 yards, but rookie running back Trent Richardson gained only 47 yards rushing on 14 carries. Dawson kicked field goals of 51, 50 and 52 yards, the last one with 4:33 left to make it 23-16.

It's the third time since 1998 that the Browns have lost their first four games. They finished 2-14 in 1999 and 5-11 in 2009.

Coach Pat Shurmur applauded the performance of the refs, and acknowledged he deserved an unsportsmanlike conduct call in the fourth quarter.

"I can't do that," he said. "It's an emotional game, and I got to make sure I keep my emotions in check."

Cleveland played the majority of the game without wide receiver and punt returner Joshua Cribbs, who sustained a concussion while returning a kick late in the first quarter.

Cribbs had his helmet knocked off and lost the handle on the ball after absorbing a hard hit by Dannell Ellerbe. It was legal tackle, shoulder to helmet, and the officials did not call a penalty. Cribbs lay prone for several minutes before finally rising to his feet and walking off the field.

Flacco went 16 for 26 for 186 yards and a touchdown to stake the Ravens to 9-7 halftime lead.

NOTES: Former Browns and Ravens RB Jamal Lewis was inducted in Baltimore's Ring of Honor. ... Cleveland safeties Tashaun Gipson and Usama Young both sustained knee injuries. ... Dawson is the seventh player in NFL history to kick three FGs of at least 50 yards in a game.

5 Signs You're Ready To Start Your Own Business | Glassdoor Blog

The tough job market has forced many people to consider starting their own business. But necessity doesn?t guarantee success. Often, success depends on the reasons you decided to start the business to begin with.

?A lot of times I hear somebody talking about starting a business because they hate their job or hate their boss,? says Gary Shouldis, a small business consultant and coach. ?That?s not a reason to start a business. Maybe they need to find a new career or a new company.?

Before you trade in your time card for an expense account, consider these five signs you?re ready to go out on your own:

1. You?ve been pondering it for sometime

Starting your own business isn?t an idea that pops in your head one day and the next day you?re marching into your boss? office to quit your job. For many successful business owners, it?s an idea they?ve considered perhaps for many years. ?It?s something they?ve been thinking about for a long time. They?ve explored other avenues, tried to do the career, but felt like for their own personal growth they needed to pursue their own business,? says Shouldis.

2. You can do it better

For some people, the light bulb to start their own business goes off by watching the mistakes of their own boss. Maybe their current employer doesn?t execute correctly or the company mistreats its customers or clients. Whatever the reason, the impetus for many small business owners was the realization they would do it differently, says Jeanne Yocum, founder of the blog Succeeding in Small Business. ?If you are questioning the decisions on a routine basis, you may want to go out and see if your way is better,? says Yocum.

3. It doesn?t come from a place of unhappiness

If you think starting your own business is going to bring you happiness because you?ll be your own boss or can set your own hours, think again. According to Shouldis, the people who struggle the most when they go out on their own are the ones who do it because they hate their job. ?You?ll never work harder than for yourself,? says Shouldis. ?You are going to make demands on yourself and your business that you never experienced.?

According to Shouldis, the people who are successful are the ones that don?t hate their career, but rather have a different calling. They aren?t doing it for money or for more free time, they are doing it out of passion.

They also aren?t shackled by a paycheck. ?If you start to see your pay check as a ball and chain rather than a benefit, that?s a real sign,? says Yocum.

4. You have the expertise and confidence

In order to be a successful business owner, you have to know what you are doing and do it well. That?s why career experts say before you go out on your own, make sure you have the expertise and experience to run your own business. If you do have that, you?ll be confident in your dealings with customers and business associates, which is key to running a successful business.? ?You have to feel confident you can do it,? says Yocum.? ?It comes at different times for different people.?

5. You have a desire to keep on learning

In a career, chances are you?ll spend your time doing one thing really well. When you own your own business you wear many hats whether its receptionist, sales associate, book keeper or IT manager, which is why you have to possess a desire to learn. If you are the type of person that is always looking to better yourself and wants to learn new things then chances are you?ll do well as a business owner.

?You always have to branch out and grow,? says Shouldis. ?As a small business owner, you don?t have a marketing department, a finance department or a janitorial department. The ones that do it well are always interested in learning new things and are always trying to better themselves.?

Do You Really Want To File For Bankruptcy?

In a recent report, bankruptcy filings dropped to 12% in 2011. According to Ronald Mann of Columbia Law School, there were 1.35 million Americans who filed for Chapter 13 or Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The figure is less than the 2010 filings of 1.5 million Americans. According to the same report, Chapter 7 filings went down by 17% while Chapter 13 filings went down by 25%. However, Mann said that there was an increase during the latter part of 2011 which can be reflected in this year?s data. In California, especially in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the rate there was pegged at one in every 120 California residents but Nevada had the worst rate at 1 in every 88 Nevada residents which is double than the national average. Texas had the lowest rate at 1 in 379 Texas residents.

The Business Bankruptcy Attorney

The most fundamental rule in hiring business bankruptcy attorneys is to know their services and capabilities, and whether these would meet the company?s requirements. Bankruptcy procedures are extremely complicated. The object of bankruptcy laws is to assist both debtors and creditors in coming to a mutually beneficial agreement. Creditors want to retain debtors as their clients. A bad debt means uncollected receivables and a lost customer. No creditor would like to have uncollectable receivables and to lose a good customer. The company has to hire numerous experts before it can devise an adequate debt management scheme because of the intricate nature of debt settlement. Usually lawyers who specialize in contracts, taxation, corporate finance, or real estate will work with the business bankruptcy lawyer to optimize the debt management scheme. The company should know what assets can be protected before a bankruptcy claim is initiated in court. Should the business fail in this respect, it will be open to lawsuits from creditors without the protection of the court. The purpose of a bankruptcy procedure is to enable a firm to continue operating while paying its debts to its creditors according to a plan that was set up with the approval of the courts. This means that the firm has a plan to pay the debts while continuing to operate. The debt payment plan gives a business adequate room to function while still addressing its debt problem. It is essential that the debt repayment schedule does not affect its ability to meet its business objectives. This will enable the business in distress to devise a schedule of debt repayment that it can pursue while still operating as a business. While this seems to favor debtors, it is in fact beneficial to both debtors and creditors. The law gives the debtor a free hand to set up a debt schedule plan that can be maintained. The responsibility of managing resources efficiently still revolves around the firm that has filed for bankruptcy. The business bankruptcy attorney is just one of the experts a firm needs to become solvent again. The firm also needs other experts in different business fields in order to identify the best options available. When creditors are harassing a firm, filing for bankruptcy may be the only option. The bankruptcy proceedings would give the firm legal protection against any unreasonable claims from the creditors. Business bankruptcy attorneys should be very knowledgeable about state laws on this matter. Therefore, they should be practicing lawyers in the state they reside. Before the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act was passed in 2005, the debtor had an unlimited time to set up a debt repayment schedule. However, once the law was passed, it imposed a limit of 120 days for a debtor to devise a debt payment plan which had to be submitted in court for approval. Therefore, it is imperative that the firm submits a good plan during that time period otherwise its creditors will devise their own plans for debt repayment, which may not be to the liking of the firm. The law gives debtors a chance to formulate their own plans because the debt should not be an insurmountable obstacle that prevents the business from functioning. The new law curbed the loopholes in the old bankruptcy law that enabled a firm to postpone indefinitely the making of a debt payment schedule because the debtor had indefinite time limit to devise such scheme. It also increased the necessity of hiring a bankruptcy lawyer so that he could devise a schedule within the imposed deadline. It imposed greater discipline in debt collection. The Bankruptcy Attorney will definitely help those people if they have filed for bankruptcy so that, the common people do not get over burdened with the debt which will be impossible for them to pay back.Click here for Bankruptcy Attorney If you are looking for the best person to advise you on business liquidity issues and insolvency, the best person to do so is a business bankruptcy attorney.Visit http://www.voklaw.com/ for more details.

The Pros And Cons Of Filing For Personal Bankruptcy

When you are going through bankruptcy proceedings, it is sure to cause a great deal of stress. Look for a good attorney who can help you through the process. Try not to pick a lawyer based on cost alone. Quality is far more important than expense when it comes to a good bankruptcy attorney. Get referrals from those who have used a bankruptcy lawyer, talk to the bureau for better business, and take advantage of free consultations offered by most lawyers. Try attending a hearing to find out how bankruptcy attorneys handle the situation.

Personal Bankruptcy and Small Business Bankruptcy in Indiana Marked by the Same Common Mistakes

Taking on more debt right before a bankruptcy: ?Taking trips, taking cash advances, or maxing out credit lines before an anticipated bankruptcy can actually be seen as a form of fraud?.?be honest, keep additional debt to a minimum and ensure that any money spent is absolutely necessary,? cautions Eldridge. ? Lawmakers were obviously concerned that debtors might abuse the system, which would not be fair to creditors.? Each situation is different, however, and if buying a car to get to work or paying for medical treatment is the form of new debt, that?s not abuse. The point of bankruptcy in Indiana or anywhere else is to treat all parties as fairly as possible while still providing a safety net.? That?s one of the reasons I always advise not waiting, but talking with an attorney at the first signs of financial trouble. It?s why I offer no-cost and no-obligation consultations.

APNewsBreak: Ex-Dodger owners back in family court

By ANDREW DALTON

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:44 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The ex-wife of former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has filed a motion to set aside the couple's divorce settlement, claiming he committed fraud by vastly understating the team's value.

Jamie McCourt's attorney, Bertram Fields, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that she "thought very long and very hard about whether to file this motion" but after other means failed she was forced to return to court over the value of the team that sold for $2 billion in May.

"Mr. McCourt got about 93 percent of the family assets, and Mrs. McCourt got about 7 percent," Fields said in a phone interview. "We would've much preferred to have this massive imbalance resolved with some modification, but we got no response to that approach. We didn't want to have more family litigation, but now it's up to the court."

The motion filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court claims Frank McCourt misrepresented the couple's Dodgers assets as worth less than $300 million during their protracted divorce.

The pair's marriage was dissolved in October 2010, and Jamie McCourt received $131 million. The new court papers claim that after the sale and subtraction of relevant debts, Frank McCourt's assets turned out to be worth $1.7 billion, well over 10 times the amount Jamie McCourt received.

The motion says that even if Frank McCourt's figures were the result of mistakes rather than fraud, the settlement should be tossed out on the basis of the errors.

An email message seeking comment was sent to Ryan Kirkpatrick, an attorney for Frank McCourt, late Tuesday.

The Dodgers went into bankruptcy protection in June 2011, but Frank McCourt eventually sold the team in May of this year to a group that includes former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson for $2 billion, the highest figure ever paid for a pro sports franchise.

The group has vowed to restore dignity to the storied franchise after the era of McCourt, who is widely reviled by Dodgers fans for his seemingly profligate lifestyle at the club's expense after he bought the team from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. for $430 million in 2004.

In bankruptcy filings, attorneys for Major League Baseball said Frank McCourt looted more than $180 million in revenue from the club for personal use and other business unrelated to the team.

Divorce documents laid out the couple's expensive tastes, including the purchase of several homes, trips on chartered jets, country club memberships and even a six-figure, on-call hair stylist.

A hearing on the motion to set aside the divorce settlement has been scheduled for Nov. 16.

Weight Loss For Children : Help Me Lose Weight. | How Can You ...

?

Weight Loss has become mainstream media over the past 20 years, if not longer. Everyone wants to know How To lose weight fast, keep the weight off, and the easiest ways to stay fit. Everyone wants to jump on the ?next big thing? and hope that there train will come rolling in. The sad truth is that most of these people fail to lose weight. If they do, they can?t keep it off for very long.

Why is that? Well, for starters, weight loss isn?t a temporary solution. Since being chronically overweight or obese is a long term problem, weight loss needs to be viewed as a long term solution.

Did you or your child put on an extra ten pounds at one meal? What about one Christmas dinner? (well, that one might be possible, but hopefully not likely).

If you or your child didn?t gain all the weight in one sitting, what makes you think you can lose it all that fast? Common sense dictates that problems created over a period of time need to be solved over a similar period of time. Do you see now why we are targeting childhood obesity? We want to minimize the amount of time people are overweight and at risk for various health issues related to obesity. So if your child has only been overweight for a year or so, we can help to bring them back to the healthy weight in the same period of time, or much shorter depending on your efforts and determination.

If on the other hand an adult has been overweight for 15 years, then their weight loss process will take considerably longer.

The reason? Well, simply put, they have spent the past 15 years developing bad habits that now need to be broken and ideas about food that need to be reversed. Are we saying it will take just as long to lose the weight as it did to put it on?

Absolutely Not! However, it will take longer if you or your child has been overweight for a longer period of time. A good rule of thumb to get back into acceptable shape is one-two months of healthy living for every year of unhealthy living. So, if your child has been overweight for just a year, it will take only two months to get them back down to the proper weight and size. That is, of course, assuming that all the proper steps are followed.

There are three main steps that need to be adhered to in order to get to a healthy weight and stay there.

The three P?s are:

- Patience

- Planning and

- Persistence

Patience: This isn?t a race. You aren?t competing against the neighbor?s kids to get your kid in fighting shape by the next wrestling match. Instead, you need to focus on pacing yourself and your child so that the goal of weight loss can be achieved. You want your child to understand the value of patience in everything, and you need to understand that by being patient you are more likely to withstand the downturns when they come and bounce back.

Planning: Just throwing caution to the wind and picking up food at a whim is what got your child where he is today. Planning will take all of the guess work out of what you need to stock in the house so that the weight loss will be automatic. I gained 20 pounds after getting out of the Navy, and I felt gross. When you leave a regimented lifestyle and just pick out whatever sounds appetizing for the moment, you lose. No one can win without a plan. You?ve heard the term ?Failing to plan is like planning to fail? right? Well it?s no different here. You absolutely need to plan how to go about losing weight (you and your kids). We are here to help.

Persistence: Persistence is needed in order to see the plan through to completion. Without persistence you are going to fail. Nothing in life comes easy, whether you would like to think so or not. This is especially true in weight loss. Even Kirstie Alley wasn?t able to lose all of her love handles in one try, nor was it immediate. She implemented the three P?s and lost weight (at least the first time).

Health Issues And Tips Designed as Educational Information, to helpsolve health Issues, with Tips on exercise,Weight Loss, Addictions, SleepDis-orders, Depression and much more.

Short term goals The best way to feel as though you are making progress in any endeavor is to make short term goals.

How short? Well, that depends on you. Do you forget what you had planned for the day by lunch time? In that case, make daily and weekly goals. You can also set biweekly, monthly, and yearly goals.

An example of how to make a weekly goal would be:

- Instead of trying to get your child down three sizes in the next month, focus on how to get them eating fewer calories in the next week.

- Don?t go out for fast food or pizza this week

- Make lunches for your child for every day of the week

- Make a weekly dinner meal plan that you can actually implement

- Go for a 30 minute walk every evening after dinner

For monthly goals, try these out:

- Only go out for dinner four times this month (that includes fast food, pizza, and dine in type restaurants)

- Take part in an outdoor activity as a family every weekend

- Turn a nightly walk into a run once a week for the next month

- Read one book on weight loss and fitness

- Join a new group activity that you haven?t done before and attend the classes for one straight month (this can be the YMCA, a yoga class, dance class, martial arts, etc. Make it tailored to your child?s likes and dislikes)

Goals need to be specific and attainable. You don?t want your goal to be ?Lose two inches this month.? You can have that thought, or even overall long term goal, but you need to have short term goals that drive you towards that end. If your short term goal is too broad, you won?t be able to focus on smaller things that get you there. Your short term goals need to be small, focused, and attainable. Don?t make them easy goals, push the envelope a little, but don?t make them unattainable either.

For instance, don?t make a goal of losing ten pounds this week. Instead, make a goal of reducing your caloric intake by 100 calories daily. This will aid in losing those ten pounds down the road, but it won?t happen over night.

Remember: - Patience - Planning and - Persistence

Keeping these 3 P?s in mind, you will get where you want to be, and so will your Children!

While the accomplishment is weighty enough on its own -- especially given that the store also offers books, music and movies, which aren't included in this tally -- Google is celebrating in symbolic style with a number of apps and games for sale at just $0.25 over the next five days. Among the mix of discounted titles, you'll find publishers such as Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, Runtastic and Full Fat. Not to stop there, shoppers will also discover a curated collection of 25 must-own movies, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and 25 top-selling magazines.

With today's announcement, it was revealed that 675,000 apps and games now live in Google Play -- a healthy increase when compared to 600,000 titles and 20 billion installs just three months ago. As you might expect, Apple still claims the largest selection with 700,000 titles in its App Store, although with such a thin separation between the two, we may see Google Play eclipse its rival in short order.

DNA case backlog at FBI down 87 percent in 2 years

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The FBI laboratory has reduced its backlog of forensic DNA cases by 87 percent in two years, from 3,211 cases to 403 cases.

The Justice Department's inspector general attributes most of the decline to increased staffing and using automated technology. Also, the FBI is focusing on cases where DNA testing of biological evidence is more likely to yield useful information.

The lab conducts DNA tests on biological evidence taken from crime scenes and items like envelopes, clothing and drinking glasses.

Most reductions took place in the nuclear DNA Unit, which examines fluids, blood and semen. Also reducing its caseload was the mitochondrial DNA unit, which analyzes hair fragments, bones and teeth. The inspector general reported Tuesday that the backlog was reduced from March 2010 to March of this year.

Apple sells over 5 million of its iPhone 5 on first weekend

Featured

14 hrs.

The iPhone 5 started shipping (and hitting store shelves) on Friday, Sept. 21. According to Apple, the company has sold more than?five million of the new iPhone model in the three days since its debut.

?We are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible," Apple CEO?Tim Cook said?in a press release from the Cupertino-based company. "While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone?s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."

Folks who try to order an iPhone 5 at this point will find that the device won't ship for three to four weeks, but based on calls to a random selection of Apple's own stores as well as several carriers' retail locations, there still appears to be a small amount of stock in the brick-and-mortar shops. (And as Cook said, stores are regularly receiving additional?shipments of devices.)

If you are in a rush to get an iPhone 5, we suggest that you lace up your boots and pound the pavement. As?Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney points out, you should not only?get to a store early (in hopes of snagging a device from a recent product replenishment), but also strategize as to which store you will visit.

"Select a store away from the center of the city or places where commuters and shoppers congregate," she told NBC News. "A?stand-alone store on the outskirts of town may be a better bet than the one in a mall.

In case you somehow missed all the excitement about the device, let's review the basics about the iPhone 5,?the latest generation of Apple's popular smartphone. In appearance, it is similar to the iPhone 4S, its predecessor, though it has?a 4-inch display (rather than a 3.5-inch display) and is a bit thinner.?The iPhone 5 offers 4G LTE connectivity (meaning users will see faster data speeds), improved battery life, a faster processor, and a lighter body.?

Out of the box,?the new smartphone will run iOS 6, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, which means that it will have?an improved version of Siri, a new app called Passbook (which will store boarding passes, discount cards, and similar items), and about 200 other?new features.?

Much to the dismay of many, the new operating system does not offer a Google-powered Maps app, but instead uses Apple's own creation (which is not earning much praise so far).

In better news, the iPhone 5 is considered to be "easier than ever" to repair, much to the relief of those who?live in constant?fear of dropping their iPhones and damaging the devices.
