Finding New Treatments for Brain Cancer ? Dr. Greg Foltz of the Ivy ...

Brain cancer is one of the most malignant forms of cancer known to humans today. However, researchers at Swedish?s Ivy Brain Tumor Center in Seattle are working hard to find new treatments. Dr. Greg Foltz, director of the Ivy Center says certain cells in tumors may provide clues to researchers searching for promising new treatment options within the next 5 years. Dr. Foltz is one of the world?s leading experts in brain cancer research and treatments. He is both a clinician and researcher who is on a mission to end brain cancer as we know it today. As part of this mission, he and his patients have organized an annual brain cancer walk in Seattle. The walk provides money to support this research. For example, money raised from the walk in 2009 went to fund research that explored whether cancer stem cells are the cause of drug resistance in patients. It enabled researchers to develop new techniques to isolate these cells and to study the molecular and genetic features of the cancer cells. The research holds promise. The study has received national attention and resulted in a highly competitive .2 million federal grant award to study and categorize these cancer stem cells and the vulnerabilities that could lead to new treatment approaches for patients. Awareness matters. For more information visit the brain cancer walk?s website online at www.BrainCancerWalk.org, or on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/BrainCancer.

Mega Space Storm Would Spell Disaster Differently (ContributorNetwork)

This year has seen disaster come in all shapes and sizes -- from earthquakes to tsunamis, tornadoes, floods and wildfires. Now, an article on NewScientist.com points out a different type of disaster that could also have far-reaching effects but on a global scale.

The article discussed the dangers of a massive solar storm striking the Earth and the long-term effects upon satellites. Why is that a troublesome issue? If satellites go down -- and the space storm theory holds that a large enough solar blast could disable satellites in orbit around the Earth for as long as 10 years -- so goes much about life as we know it.

Do you like your television signal? If you like that Global Positioning System in your car, you can kiss it goodbye, but satellites are not the only things that would be affected by a massive solar storm.

Last week a massive power grid shutdown occurred in the Southwest, leaving millions of people in dark, sweltering heat. A strong enough solar storm would repeat that same story around the world and would affect billions of people in the United States alone. Electromagnetic waves from such storms can cause disruptions that could affect the Internet, cell service, landline phone service and so much more.

What would a massive power outage mean? Think about it -- the electricity goes down, what goes next? Electricity powers pumps that bring water to our homes, meaning that water supplies shut down. Food and medicine storage in refrigerators and freezers goes away. Communications are shut down.

Travel sources that rely upon electricity are no longer available. Got gas? Not anymore as gas pumps rely upon electricity.

Today, life as we know it is so dependent upon technology and each level is intertwined. It is a domino effect in that if one aspect goes down, it can bring down the whole row. During recent disasters such as the earthquake in Virginia on Aug. 23 and Hurricane Irene as well as Tropical Storm Lee, disaster of any type causes massive disruption but on a more focused level.

In Japan, the Tohoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami caused massive death and destruction and shutdown of everyday life. The resulting affects upon the Fukushima nuclear plant added more disaster to the mix.

While currently, the sun is in an active cycle of activity, it is uncertain if -- or when -- a massive space storm could occur that would bring disaster on this scale. A 2003 series of 10 solar flares knocked out satellites and wreaked havoc on an instrument board on a Mars orbiter. Years earlier, a solar storm in 1989 caused a massive blackout of the power grid in Quebec.

Ultimately, as with any disaster planning, being prepared first of all for evacuation to safety then secondly preparing for loss of electricity is key to being ready.

Pentagon: Insurgent group behind Afghan bombing

Pentagon officials are confident that the Haqqani insurgent network is behind the weekend attack on a combat outpost in Wardark province in Afghanistan that left five Afghans dead, including four civilians, and 77 American troops wounded.

Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby said that the U.S. has "strong confidence" that members of the Haqqani terror network were involved, adding that there is also a "very strong likelihood" that the operation was supported by top Haqqani leadership.

Story: Report: Taliban to be brought in from the cold

Kirby would not get into specifics about why the U.S. believes Haqqani is behind the attack on Combat Outpost Sayed Abad, but did say that the culprits had "good resourcing, good planning." He said it involved a large truck and a large amount of explosives, adding that it was not just a single suicide bomber.

"This was not some guy with a suicide vest; this was a large, large vehicle with a large amount of explosive material," said Kirby. "You don't conduct that kind of attack without good resourcing, good planning and a fair level of coordination."

The massive bomb loaded on a truck filled with firewood exploded Saturday night just outside the gates of Combat Outpost Sayed Abad.

Officials said four of those killed were civilians, including a 3-year-old girl.

Another 17 people ? 14 civilians and three policemen ? were wounded. The provincial governor said the blast was so powerful it damaged about 100 shops in the Sayed Abad bazaar, located near the military base.

None of the 77 hurt Americans appeared to have suffered life-threatening injuries, NBC News reported.

"The majority of injured ISAF personnel will likely return to duties shortly," an ISAF statement added.

The Haqqani network is a Pakistan-based militant group allied with the Taliban that was started by Jalaluddin Haqqani, who rose to prominence in the 1980s receiving weapons and funds from the CIA and Saudi Arabia to fight Soviet forces in Afghanistan.

Although considered to be a part of the larger Taliban umbrella organization headed by Mullah Omar and his Quetta Shura Taliban, the Haqqanis maintain their own command and control and lines of operation.

They are believed to have introduced suicide bombing into Afghanistan and to have been behind several high-profile attacks, including an attempted assassination of President Hamid Karzai and a raid on Kabul's top hotel.

The Taliban had claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Sunday, the Taliban issued a statement vowing to fight until all foreign troops leave. The radical Islamic movement, which gave shelter to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida when it ruled Afghanistan, also stressed that it had no role in the Sept. 11 attacks, and it accused the U.S. of using them as a pretext to invade the country.

"The Afghans have an endless stamina for a long war," the statement said. "Through a countrywide uprising, the Afghans will send the Americans to the dustbin of history like they sent other empires of the past."

The attack occurred just over 40 miles, or about an hour's drive, from Kabul in an increasingly lawless district in a key province that controls a strategic approach to the capital.

NBC News' Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube and The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Sept. 11 marked with reading of nearly 3,000 names (AP)

NEW YORK ? The names of the Sept. 11 dead, some recited by children barely old enough to remember their fallen mothers and fathers, echoed across ground zero Sunday in a haunting but hopeful tribute on the 10th anniversary of the terror attack. "Hope can grow from tragedy," Vice President Joe Biden said at the Pentagon.

Weeping relatives of the victims streamed into a newly opened memorial at the spot where the World Trade Center stood. They placed pictures and flowers beside names etched in bronze, and traced them with pencil and paper. President Barack Obama and his predecessor, George W. Bush, bowed their heads and touched the inscriptions.

Obama, standing behind bulletproof glass and in front of the white oak trees of the memorial, read a Bible passage after a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., when the first jetliner slammed into the north tower 10 years ago.

The president, quoting Psalm 46, invoked the presence of God as an inspiration to endure: "Therefore, we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea."

The New York ceremony was the centerpiece of a day of remembrance across the country. It was a chance to reflect on a decade that changed American life, including two wars and an overhaul of everyday security at airports and in big cities.

In a ceremony at the Pentagon, Biden paid tribute to "the 9/11 generation of warriors."

"Never before in our history has America asked so much over such a sustained period of an all-volunteer force," he said. "So I can say without fear of contradiction or being accused of exaggeration, the 9/11 generation ranks among the greatest our nation has ever produced, and it was born ? it was born ? it was born right here on 9/11."

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta observed a moment of silence at 9:37 a.m., marking the time a jet struck the headquarters of the nation's military. He paid tribute to 6,200 members of the U.S. military who have died in the Iraq and Afghan wars.

In Shanksville, Pa., a choir sang at the Flight 93 National Memorial, and a crowd of 5,000 listened to a reading of the names of 40 passengers and crew killed aboard the fourth jetliner hijacked that day a decade ago. Obama and his wife traveled to the Pennsylvania town after their visit to New York and placed a wreath at the memorial.

During the president's visit, members of the crowd chanted, "USA! USA!" One man called out: "Thanks for getting bin Laden!" This is the first anniversary observance since Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan.

The day's events took place under higher security than usual. In New York and Washington especially, authorities were on alert. Ahead of the anniversary, the federal government warned those cities of a tip about a possible car-bomb plot. Police searched trucks in New York, and streets near the trade center were blocked. To walk within blocks of the site, people had to go through checkpoints.

In New York, family members began read aloud the names of 2,983 victims ? 2,977 killed in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, and six killed in the first terror attack on the trade center, a truck bomb in 1993.

"You will always be my hero," Patricia Smith, 12, said of her mother.

Nicholas Gorki remembered his father, "who I never met because I was in my mother's belly. I love you, Father. You gave me the gift of life, and I wish you could be here to enjoy it with me."

Alex Zangrilli said: "Dad, I wish you were here with me to give me advice, to be on the sidelines when I play sports like all the other dads. ... I wish we had more time together."

Peter Negron, 21, whose father worked on the 88th floor of the north tower, said that in the decade since the attack, he had tried to teach his younger brother lessons he had learned from their father.

"I decided to become a forensic scientist," Negron said. "I hope that I can make my father proud of the young men my brother and I have become. I miss you so much, Dad."

Bush quoted a letter from Abraham Lincoln to a mother who was believed to have lost five sons in battle during in the Civil War: "I pray that our heavenly father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement."

Obama and Bush were joined by their wives as they walked up to one of the two reflecting pools built over the towers' footprints, part of a Sept. 11 memorial that was opened for relatives of the victims.

Some family members held children on their backs who were not yet born when the towers were attacked.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, opening the ceremony, said: "Although we can never un-see what happened here, we can also see that children who lost their parents have grown into young adults. ... Good works have taken root in public service."

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma played a mournful Bach composition. James Taylor sang the melancholy "Close Your Eyes," and Paul Simon strummed a raw version of "The Sound of Silence."

As the sun rose, an American flag fluttered over six stories of the rising 1 World Trade Center. The sky was clear blue with scattered white clouds and a light breeze, not unlike that Tuesday morning 10 years ago.

The site looked utterly different than it had for any other Sept. 11 anniversary: Along with the names in bronze, there were two manmade waterfalls directly on the footprints of the towers, surrounded by dozens of white oak trees.

Elijah Portillo, 17, whose father was killed in the attack, said he had never wanted to attend the anniversary because he thought he would feel angry. But this time was different, he said.

"Time to be a big boy," Elijah said. "Time to not let things hold you back. Time to just step out into the world and see how things are."

In a taped interview, the president told NBC that the United States "came through this thing in a way that was consistent with our character."

"We've made mistakes. Some things haven't happened as quickly as they needed to," he said. "But overall, we took the fight to al-Qaida, we preserved our values, we preserved our character."

People across America gathered to pray at cathedrals in their greatest cities and to lay roses before fire stations in their smallest towns.

Around the world, people paid tribute in formal ceremonies and quiet moments.

In Japan, they laid flowers before a glass case containing a small section of trade center steel, and remembered 23 employees of Fuji Bank who never made it out of the towers.

A village in the Philippines offered roses, balloons and prayers for an American victim whose widower built 50 brightly colored homes there, fulfilling his late wife's wish to help the Filipino poor.

In Malaysia, Pathmawathy Navaratnam woke up and, as she has done every morning for 10 years, wished "good morning" to her son, a 23-year-old financial analyst who was killed in New York.

"He is my sunshine. He has lived life to the fullest, but I can't accept that he is not here anymore," said Navaratnam. "I am still living, but I am dead inside."

The day's events also included a ceremony featuring nine-story replicas of the twin towers on a plaza in Paris.

In a reminder of the war that started in the wake of the attacks, 77 American soldiers were wounded when a Taliban suicide bomber detonated a truck bomb outside the gates of a U.S. base in eastern Afghanistan. Two Afghans were killed.

Some observed the day as a time to serve. Thousands cleaned parks, renovated community centers and gave blood as they did in the days after the 2001 attacks. Some said they were trying to reclaim goodwill that they said has been lost amid political rancor and economic fear.

"As unfortunate as it was, it seemed like it put us all back into the frame of mind that life wasn't just about me," said Yvette Windham, who joined 200 people to build seven new homes in a Nashville, Tenn., neighborhood.

Hotmail, MSN outage sparks doubts about Microsoft cloud

Microsoft

By Athima Chansanchai

For a few hours last night, millions of Hotmail users and other Microsoft online services were unable to access or use their accounts, which led to the usual en masse griping on Twitter and Facebook. While service seems to be restored, the outage might have a lingering impact on the perception of the company's future in cloud computing.

Not only was Hotmail down, but also Skydrive, MSN and Office 365.

As BBC News reported, "Such a major problem is likely to raise questions about the reliability of cloud computing versus local storage.?Especially embarrassing is the temporary loss of Office 365, the company's alternative to Google's suite of online apps."

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

The Windows Blog has yet to be updated from last night's 11:49 p.m. post, which seems to home in on the problem:

We have completed propagating our DNS configuration changes around the world, and have restored service for most customers. Depending on your location you may still experience issues over the next 30 minutes as the changes make their way through the network. Thank you for your patience as we have worked to address these issues.

The posts addressing the problem had previously begun at 9:45 p.m. with this statement:

We believe we have restored service for all customers at this time. We will continue our investigation into the root cause of these issues and post an update following our investigation. Again we appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience.

Clearly this wasn't the case since service hadn't been restored for many by this time.

CNET reported that "Microsoft tweeted around midnight that it believed service had been restored for all Office 365 customers (and presumably for customers of Hotmail and the other affected online services)." The story also had background on other outages that have hit Microsoft, as well as Google, Yahoo and Amazon.

The complaints that poured onto Twitter were not only in English, but in many languages, which brought home the global pervasiveness of Hotmail. Hotmail has already had its share of problems earlier this year with thousands of accounts affected by?missing emails?and?attacks in late spring.

As?GeekWire?noted, this outage is the second "high-profile" flub for Microsoft's browser-based services, after the?Office 365 outage?last month, which led to a credit for affected customers.

On the other hand, some on Twitter could not believe people were still so reliant on Hotmail.?

Though Gmail converts may find it hard to believe, this longstanding free Web-based email service ??which just celebrated its 15th birthday in July ? has about 360 million users worldwide, according to comScore.
