Foul-mouthed parrot seeks new home in UK

(AP) ? Everyone has a few faults. In Beaky's case, he swears (a lot) and he bites.

Not good qualities for a parrot seeking a new home.

Still, honesty is the best policy, so the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has decided to come clean about his shortcomings.

Supervisor Angelina Lusher said Wednesday that anyone who takes Beaky in will have to put up with some rude language. The agency also says he tends to bite people until he bonds with them.

Beaky is a chattering lory who will only be given to new owners with experience handling exotic birds.

Lusher says Beaky needs interaction with people or other birds to have a fulfilling life.

High-Tech Ways to Save on Home Energy Costs

My home energy bills keep going up ? and I don't imagine I'm alone. But in addition to the usual solutions like "turn down your thermostat" and "switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs ? or better yet, LEDs", I've discovered some high-tech tools that help save energy ? and money.

The Department of Energy estimates that a home energy audit can cut your bills by as much as 30%. But a professional audit can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. So what can you do on your own?

First, do a visual inspection of your crawl spaces. When I had a professional energy auditor come to my house, the biggest efficiency loss they found was from heating ducts that had separated. In many homes, they find areas in the attic or under the floor that aren't insulated at all. Nothing that you can't discover and fix for yourself.

But I promised high tech tips. So here you go:

Infrared Thermal Leak Detector
An infrared thermal leak detector costs $40 and will find leaky, drafty areas that could use some new caulk or weather stripping, or even identify hidden "soft spots" in your insulation ? places where insulation is missing or has settled in your walls or in other hard-to-see areas. Sure, you could walk around and feel for cool spots with you hand, but a good gadget is way more fun ? and more accurate. This tool also works for hot spots in the summer; places where a lack of insulation allows air-conditioned cool air to leak out.

The "Kill-A-Watt"
Your electric bill can tell you that your costs are going up, but it can't tell you which appliances are really to blame. Plug the "Kill-A-Watt" in between your appliances and the wall to find out how much each of your devices is really costing you. Then you can compare that number to published numbers for new appliances, to figure out how much you could save by upgrading to a more energy-efficient model.

Using the Kill-A-Watt, I found that my 15 year-old fridge uses about two kWh per day.? A new one would use about half that. If I replaced my fridge today, I could save about 40 bucks a year. For me, that's too long a payback period, but you could easily discover that you'd save 100 bucks a year ? then it starts making sense.

Programmable Thermostats
Even more than your refrigerator, heating and cooling probably take the biggest chunk out of your home energy dollar. While better insulation is almost always worth the money, here's a much cheaper idea: With a programmable thermostat, you can set your heater or air conditioner to take a break when you're asleep or out of the house, and turn back on just before you get home. A bare-bones model costs about $25; you can install it yourself; and it could pay for itself in a single month. The new NEST programmable thermostat, designed by the original designer of the iPod, is a bit pricier. But you can control it from a smart phone, and it even programs itself.

Smart Power Strips
Leaving your home entertainment system devices on all the time can add up to $67 a year of wasted energy. The energy-saving Smart Strip senses when you turn off your TV, and will simultaneously shut off your peripherals.
And I know I should turn off the power strip under the desk to thwart the vampire energy suckers, or at Christmas I know I should go out and turn off the lights, but I often don't. Enter the remote control power strip. Click, and it cuts the juice.

Steelers shut down Griffin III, Redskins 27-12

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? The Pittsburgh Steelers turned Robert Griffin III into just another rookie quarterback.

The Steelers swarmed Washington's precocious star on Sunday, keeping Griffin in check during a dominant 27-12 victory. Griffin completed just 16 of 34 passes for 177 yards and a score while managing 10 yards rushing.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had no such issues against Washington's depleted defense, throwing for 222 yards and three touchdowns as the Steelers (4-3) won consecutive games for the first time this season.

Jonathan Dwyer added 107 yards rushing in his second NFL start. Pittsburgh jumped on Washington (3-5) early, scoring on its first four possessions and never letting Griffin get loose.

Heath Miller caught four passes for 46 yards and his sixth touchdown of the season for the Steelers, who suddenly look like their normal selves in a wide-open AFC.

Why astronauts experience low blood pressure after returning to Earth from space

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? When astronauts return to Earth, their altitude isn't the only thing that drops -- their blood pressure does too. This condition, known as orthostatic hypotension, occurs in up to half of those astronauts on short-term missions (two weeks or less) and in nearly all astronauts after long-term missions (four to six months). A new research report published online in The FASEB Journal solves the biological mystery of how this happens by showing that low gravity compromises the ability of arteries and veins to constrict normally, inhibiting the proper flow of blood.

Prevention and treatment strategies developed for astronauts may also hold promise for elderly populations on Earth who experience orthostatic hypotension more than any other age group.

"The idea of space exploration has been tantalizing the imagination of humans since our early existence. As a scientist, I have had the opportunity to learn that there are many medical challenges associated with travel in a weightless environment, such as orthostatic hypotension, bone loss and the recently recognized visual impairment that occurs in astronauts," said Michael D. Delp, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, and the Center for Exercise Science at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. "Although I have come to realize that it is unlikely I will ever get to fulfill my childhood dream of flying in space, I take great satisfaction with helping in the discovery of how microgravity alters the human body and how we can minimize these effects, so humans can safely explore the bounds of our universe."

To make this discovery, Delp and colleagues examined arteries and veins from mice housed at Kennedy Space Center in Florida with blood vessels from groups of mice flown on three of the last five space shuttle missions -- STS-131, STS-133 and STS-135. Mice flown on the STS-131 and STS-135 missions were tested immediately after returning to Earth, whereas mice from STS-133 were tested one, five and seven days after landing. Not only did they find that these mice experienced the equivalent of orthostatic hypotension in humans, they also discovered that it takes as many as four days in normal gravity before the condition is reversed.

"There has been considerable interest in sending humans to the moon, asteroids, and Mars," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "but what we're finding is that extended space missions have their own inherent risks above and beyond the obvious. If we ever hope to visit distant worlds for extended periods of time -- or colonize them permanently -- we've got to figure out how to mitigate the effects that low and no gravity has on the body. This report brings us an important step closer to doing just that."

(AP) ? Archaeologists announced Thursday they have uncovered the tomb of a very early Mayan ruler, complete with rich jade jewelry and decoration.

Experts said the find at Guatemala's Tak'alik Ab'aj temple site could help shed light on the formative years of the Mayan culture.

Government archaeologist Miguel Orrego said carbon-dating indicates the tomb was built between 700 and 400 B.C., several hundred years before the Mayan culture reached its height. He said it was the oldest tomb found so far at Tak'alik Ab'aj, a site in southern Guatemala that dates back about 2,200 years.

Orrego said a necklace depicting a vulture-headed human figure appeared to identify the tomb's occupant as an "ajaw," or ruler.

"This symbol gives this burial greater importance," Orrego said. "This glyph says he ... is one of the earliest rulers of Tak'alik Ab'aj."

No bones were found during the excavation of the tomb in September, probably because they had decayed.

Experts said the rich array of jade articles in the tomb could provide clues about production and trade patterns.

Susan Gillespie, an archaeologist at the University of Florida who was not involved in the excavation, said older tombs have been found from ruling circles at the Mayan site of Copan in Honduras as well as in southern Mexico, where the Olmec culture, a predecessor to the Mayas, flourished.

Olmec influences are present in the area around Tak'alik Ab'aj, indicating possible links.

Gillespie said that because it is near a jadeite production center, the find could shed light on early techniques and trade in the stone, which was considered by the Maya to have sacred properties.

NYT defends incoming chief amid BBC scandal

LONDON (AP) ? The New York Times stood by its incoming chief Wednesday, even as questions about a BBC child sex abuse scandal followed him from one of Britain's most respected news organizations to one of America's.

But as new CEO Mark Thompson was getting support from his new bosses, the Times ombudsman questioned his fitness for the job.

And in Britain, a lawmaker said he had more questions for Thompson.

As Thompson prepares to take over as president of The New York Times next month, he has been put on the defensive about his final days as head of the BBC and the broadcaster's decision to kill what would have been a bombshell investigative story alleging the late Jimmy Savile, one of its biggest stars, had sexually abused up to 200 children.

In a letter to a lawmaker and an interview with the Times, Thompson said he never knew of the Savile story before it was spiked and had never met the network's popular star.

New York Times Co. spokesman Bob Christie said Wednesday that the BBC scandal had "obviously been a topic that we've discussed" internally, but the Times was satisfied with Thompson's answers.

"Mark has done an excellent job of explaining the matter," Christie said. Thompson said he played no role in spiking the BBC investigation and "we're satisfied with that."

Thompson will start as the organization's CEO on Nov. 12, Christie said.

The BBC scandal has horrified Britain with revelations that Savile, a popular children's television presenter, cajoled and coerced vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, in his camper van, and even in dingy dressing rooms on BBC premises. He is also accused of sexually assaulting disabled children at hospitals that he helped by raising charity funds.

Police say there could be more than 200 victims, leading one child protection charity to say that Savile could rank among Britain's most prolific child sex predators.

The BBC said Tuesday it was looking into claims of sexual abuse and harassment against nine other current and former employees and contributors.

As increasing numbers of BBC executives come under the microscope over what they knew about Savile ? and why the posthumous expose about his sexual crimes was shelved ? Thompson, 55, the BBC director-general from 2004 until last month, is being quizzed about his role as well.

In a letter to Conservative lawmaker Rob Wilson, Thompson said he never met Savile or worked on any of the entertainer's programs, and had never heard any rumored stories about Savile's interest in young girls.

"If I had, I would have raised them with senior colleagues and contacted the police," he said.

Thompson said he heard in late December from a BBC journalist at a company cocktail party that the broadcaster's "Newsnight" program had been investigating Savile, but said the journalist never "set out what allegations 'Newsnight' were investigating or had been investigating."

Thompson said he followed the matter up with other executives who told him the "Newsnight" investigation was canceled for journalistic reasons, suggesting they believed there wasn't enough evidence.

"I had no reason to believe that his conduct was a pressing concern," Thompson told the Times. "Had I known about the nature of the allegations and the credible allegations that these horrific crimes had taken place during his time at the BBC and in the building at the BBC, I of course would have considered them very grave and would have acted very differently."

The BBC denies that a cover-up was the reason it canceled the investigative piece only weeks before the broadcaster aired a glowing tribute show to Savile, a prodigious charity fundraiser who was widely eulogized following his death last year at 84.

But "Newsnight" editor Peter Rippon recently stepped down as the BBC's internal investigation got under way. After weeks of standing by Rippon, the BBC has said his explanation about why the Savile story was not broadcast was incomplete and inaccurate.

Wilson told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he has written to Thompson again seeking more answers.

"There are questions about how much the journalist told him about the 'Newsnight' investigation that need to be cleared up as quickly as possible," Wilson said, adding that Thompson said he is willing to answer questions to the BBC and the U.K. parliamentary committee looking into the matter.

Wilson said Thompson's fitness to serve as The New York Times chief depends on the outcome of the various inquiries.

But The New York Times has already waited months for a new permanent chief executive following the resignation of Janet Robinson last December. One analyst said the paper could ill afford to wait any longer.

"My feeling is if he (Thompson) has no problem that could surface in the near future, there would be no need for him to delay," said Edward Atorino, an analyst with The Benchmark Company. "If there is an issue, he should withdraw."

The controversy drew the attention of The New York Times' public editor, Margaret Sullivan, who asked readers in a column Tuesday to evaluate the incoming chief's answers.

"How likely is it that he knew nothing?" she asked. "A director general of a giant media company is something like a newspaper's publisher. Would a publisher be very likely to know if an investigation of one of its own people on sexual abuse charges had been killed?"

In a carefully worded paragraph that followed, she raised the issue of Thompson's fitness to serve as The New York Times chief.

"His integrity and decision-making are bound to affect The Times and its journalism ? profoundly," she wrote. "It's worth considering now whether he is the right person for the job, given this turn of events."

Sullivan said that while finding an answer was "not as easy as it sounds ... all these questions ought to be asked."

Sullivan's office said Wednesday she would not be elaborating on her post.

Mitt Romney Asks Colorado to Put GOP Ticket Over the Top

Pablo Martinez Monsivais/AP Photo

ABC News? Shushannah Walshe and Emily Friedman report:

MORRISON, Colo.?In front of one of the biggest crowds of his campaign, Mitt Romney, joined by Paul Ryan, appeared at the outdoor Red Rocks Amphitheater and told a crowd of 12,000 that Colorado voters will put the GOP ticket over the top?on Nov. 6th.

?We?re on the home stretch now and I think the people of Colorado are going to get us all the way there. What do you think?,? Romney said, to roars from the crowd Tuesday. ?What you?re seeing across this country as we?ve had these debates and as Paul and I have gone across the nation, you?re seeing this movement growing.?

The GOP ticket appeared at the outdoor rally outside of Denver, where their signature ?R? logo reflected in the light on the enormous vertical rocks that surround the stunning venue. The crowd of thousands was packed into the stands, forming the emblem that is emblazoned on the Colorado state flag. ?Audience members were outfitted with noise makers, which they clapped at every pause, as well as chanting ?Romney, Ryan!?

Romney spoke to the supportive crowd?noting signs that read ?Democrats for Romney?? and urged the audience to talk to neighbors who may not be Republicans.

?I came in and some of the folks here were holding signs, ?Democrats for Romney,? all right? I love that. I love that,? Romney said to cheers.

?Paul and I have a few things in common. One is, we both learned how to reach across the aisle in our elected office, to find ways to work with Democrats, Republicans and Independents to get the job done. And we need you to reach across the neighborhood to Democrats and Independents as well, make sure they understand that this is a year to vote for real change if you want to have real recovery.?

Romney again reiterated, ?I need you to get those folks to vote for us!?

Ryan also urged the crowd to stump for them asking to cheers, ?Hey Colorado, are you ready to help us win this thing??

Polls are deadlocked in the state with both tickets within the margin of error. Ryan has spent three days campaigning in the state and ?Romney noted early voting here, which started Monday, asking people to cast their ballots early in order to help out?on Nov. 6th.

?There?s early voting now,? Romney said. ?You can take your ballots and send them in if you?ve got them. If you?ve got your absentee ballots be sure to send them in. If you haven?t got one get into the center and get sure that you get voted early. We want to get that done. We want to bank all those votes so on Election Day you can go out and get people to the polls that otherwise wouldn?t get there. Would you do that for me??

He thanked the audience, saying they are??helping change the course of a nation and setting the course on a path that will lead to greatness and prosperity again and again, that is the grassroots of America. That?s the people of America. That?s who we are tonight.?

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden told reporters earlier Tuesday that the campaign is feeling optimistic about its chances in Colorado.

?I think they?re all very close,? Madden said of the swing states. ?But we feel very, we feel very good about our prospects in Colorado.?

Before Romney and Ryan took the stage, the crowd listened to entertainers and Romney supporters Kid Rock and country star Rodney Atkins, as well as New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez.

Apple iPad mini vs Google Nexus 7: Spec comparison

Size and weight

The iPad mini shapes up at 200 x 134.7 x 7.2mm and weighs 312g, against the Nexus 7?s dimensions of 199 x 120 x 10.45mm and 340g weight. So while the devices are pretty much the same height, the iPad mini is wider - yet still thinner and lighter - reflecting more favourably on its overall form factor.

Display

The Nexus 7 has a 7in IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels (216 PPI), which trumps the 1024 x 768 pixels (163 PPI) of the iPad mini. Some may prefer the larger 7.9 screen of the latter however, with its thinner bezel accommodating more room in which to operate.

Storage and memory

The Nexus 7 comes in 8, 16 and soon, 32GB offerings, while the iPad mini will available as a 16, 32 and 64GB model. Neither has a card slot for additional memory.

Processor

The Google-Asus manufactured tablet boasts a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.3GHZ. We don?t know about the speed of Apple?s A5 chip, but its dual-core engine is likely to lag behind the Nexus 7.

Software

The Nexus 7 runs the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, with the iPad Mini running the much-maligned iOS 6.

Camera

The iPad mini offers more in this department with a 1.2-megapixel front camera and a 5-megapixel rear, while the Nexus 7 has only a 1.2-megapixel front-facing cam. Both devices record video in 720p.

Battery

This is a dead heat on paper. Each party claims its tablet can last for 10 hours.

Connectivity

While the Nexus 7 does not even come with integrated 3G, the iPad mini boasts super-fast 4G LTE connectivity on the more expensive models. The cheaper additions are Wi-Fi only like the Nexus 7.

Price

The Nexus 7 was noted for its excellent value on release at ?159 for the 8GB model and the imminent 32GB edition is expected to cost ?200. This makes Google?s product much more of a budget device, with the iPad mini?s price range starting at ?269 for the Wi-Fi only 16GB version, and ending at ?529 for the 64GB LTE model.

Guest Post: Is The World Abandoning The U.S. Economy - Zero Hedge

Submitted by Brandon Smith of Alt-Market blog,

Go to any university, any center of equities trade, any meeting place for financial academia, any fiscal think tank, and they will tell you without the slightest hint of doubt in their eyes that the U.S. economy is essential to the survival of the world.? To even broach the possibility that the U.S. could be dropped or replaced as the central pillar of trade on the planet is greeted with sneers and even anger.? But let?s set aside what we think (or what we assume) we know about the American financial juggernaut and consider the sordid history of the money powerhouse myth.?

Germany, especially in the decade leading up to WWI, was an industrial giant, rivaling Britain in the production of raw commodities like steel, as well as the banking envy of the world.? I?m sure very few economists of the era would have given any credence to the idea that the German foundation would in the near future collapse into hyperinflationary ruin.? However, that is exactly what it did.? In the span of 10 to 15 years, Germany was completely supplanted as the shining beacon of economic prosperity, never to return to a similar glory.

The British Empire from WWII up until the late 1950?s was the primary force in the global trade of oil, and the pound-sterling was dominant in the export and import of raw petroleum between nations.? Extreme debt obligations and draining interventions in the Middle East set Britain on the path to currency devaluation, and the loss of its coveted reserve status.?

The point is, there is no such thing as an invincible economy, especially if it is predicated on overt debt creation, fiat printing, and reckless foreign policy.? When it comes down to the raw data, the American system is just as fragile as any corrupt third world shanty-town nation.?

The possibility of a U.S. without financial hegemony is very real.? To understand that this possibility exists is one thing; to understand that the process of destabilization has already begun is another.? Many analysts with their heads stuck in the mainstream clouds attempt to argue against the ?theory? of foreign markets decoupling from the U.S., not realizing that their entire debate platform is pointless because the decoupling is happening right under their noses??

The recent press covering the ongoing plan by BRIC nations (or ?BRICS? if you count the latest bilateral agreements with South Africa) to establish their own supranational banking hub merely highlights the fact that developing countries are not simply ?talking? about decoupling from the United States, they are taking actions to make it happen:

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-10-16/goldman-sachs-s-o-neill-sees-brics-bank-gathering-momentum-1-.html

The response from mainstream financial analysts is, of course, that the project for a BRIC bank will fail.? Their argument, however, usually revolves around the assumption that this new central bank is designed to ?compete? with the IMF, and is a merely an overreaction to the IMF and World Bank?s failure to give developing nations more inclusion in decision making processes.? I see no evidence that the BRICS are trying to create a counter-system which would conflict with IMF control.? Instead, it would seem that the BRICS are much more interested in forcing the issue of greater inclusion, and garnering greater favor within the already existing IMF structure:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/19/imf-idUSL2E8FJ90K20120419

Last year the G20 discussed heightened participation by China and the BRICS in the IMF?s global basket currency, the SDR.? French Finance Minister and later ?elected? IMF chief Christine Lagarde agreed with the idea while stating that certain conditions, including appreciation of the Yuan?s value, would have to take place:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12905205

Contrary to the belief that the BRICS are building opposition to the IMF, China has on several occasions called for the EXPANSION of the IMF?s power, as well as widespread circulation of the SDR:

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2011-11-03/chinese-president-hu-calls-for-reform-of-imf-sdr-currency-basket.html

How have the MSM talking heads missed this trend?? Simply put:? Bias, controlled and pre-written talking points from their editors, as well as many half-baked presumptions.? The popular belief amongst financial academia is that the IMF is a product of American economic might, and that the organization will do whatever is in the best interests of the U.S. at all times.? The reality is that the IMF is fast becoming the central authority of economic operations around the globe, and America just happens to be paying the largest ?tithe? to the respective coffers of the banking syndicate.? Do you get more control in the operations of the IRS when you pay more taxes??

The IMF?s goal is world centralization of economic control.? For them, any sovereign nation is expendable in pursuit of the end game, including the United States.? The IMF would not be pushing the issuance of a new world reserve currency to unseat the dollar if they did not intend to follow through, and they certainly would not hobble the greenback if they cared in the slightest about American economic concerns.????

Rather than running counter to the IMF, BRIC partners and the newly realized ASEAN bloc are making themselves indispensible to the globalists, ensuring wider partnership in the near future.? A BRIC central bank is, I believe, a bargaining chip to be used to open the door to more leadership in the IMF while reducing American influence.? To summarize, the BRICS are not in conflict with the IMF, rather, they are in conflict with the U.S., and this conflict is coming to a climax?

Trade amongst BRIC nations continues to climb while exports to the U.S. have diminished.? Between 2001 and 2009, exports and imports between BRICS skyrocketed, even amidst the derivatives collapse:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13046521

Last year, ASEAN overtook Japan as China?s third largest trading partner.? With the announcement of increased participation by Japan in the ASEAN bloc this year, the economic body looks poised to eclipse the U.S. and perhaps even the EU as China?s primary source of export and import business:

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific_business/view/1197997/1/.html

Meanwhile, overall exports around the world have dropped for five consecutive months in 2012 on slowing demand in the West.?? The expectation of a massive resurgence in consumer demand from the U.S. has been proven unfounded, while the recession in the EU is exacerbating the downturn.? U.S. exporters, who not long ago held dreams of foreign buyers clamoring for goods in the midst of Federal Reserve inflation and dollar devaluation, have discovered that they are instead floundering:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/23/business/global/chinas-slowing-economy-puts-pressure-on-american-exporters.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1&

The mainstream claim is that this is due to a breakdown in general Chinese demand, but with exponential bilateral trade deals (many of which cut out the U.S. dollar completely as a reserve currency) being made between China and major producing and consuming countries, it is clear that this is not just a demand issue in China; it is an ongoing process of removal of the U.S. from the trading picture.? That is to say, China is deliberately reducing purchases of U.S. goods and turning towards BRIC and ASEAN partner countries to fill the void.? This may be the reason why China recently surpassed the U.S. as the top sanctuary for foreign investment:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203406404578074683825139320.html?mod=asia_home

A Treasury report on China?s status as a ?currency manipulator? already due but now delayed until after the elections may become the catalyst for the final phase of the global shunning of American markets.? With China being presented as a primary issue during the presidential debates, it would seem that regardless of who ?wins? the election there will be strain applied to Chinese trade relations.???

China?s incredible gold buying extravaganzas over the past few years (including an estimated 500 tons in 2011 and another 500 tons so far in 2012) indicate that they are indeed hedging against what they obviously expect will be devaluation in the dollar or multiple currencies around the world including the dollar.? India continues its long tradition of gold buying, while Russia is now increasing its reserves by half-a-billion dollars a month.? These are the actions of countries getting ready for a break in the financial system, not a recovery, and certainly not a return to the old days of American consumer bliss.

The argument over whether or not the BRICS and the rest of the world can drop the U.S. economy and move onward has, ultimately, been rendered obsolete.? Many will claim that a decoupling is impossible, but the fact remains that a decoupling is taking place.? The consequences of this fiscal divorce remain to be seen, and the mainstream could very easily predict disaster for the BRICS.? The real question they should be asking themselves, though, is which countries are better placed to survive such an event?? Is the U.S. economy really built to withstand a loss of the dollar as the world reserve currency?? Is the U.S. prepared for plummeting foreign investment and a reduction in its already dismal production capacity (production taking place by Americans on American soil, that is)?? Is the U.S. really ready for extreme inflation in imported goods (most of the goods we consume)?? Who really needs who more?? It is time for the pundits and average Americans alike to set aside their commercialized and subsidized fake patriotism and question how strong our economy truly is.? To ignore vast weakness today, is to feel vast pain tomorrow?

Pybus quits as Bangladesh Coach ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part 2 ? October 24, 2012

Richard Pybus has confirmed that he will no longer coach the Bangladesh national team, with his decision influenced by the constant interference from the administrators and failure to receive enough support in terms of implementing his own philosophy into the side. He also cited family concerns as another major reason.

Pybus took charge of the team in May following Stuart Law?s decision to resign from his role and head back to Australia. Under his tenure, the Bengali Tigers took part in an unofficial series in Zimbabwe, before taking a trip to Europe to take on Ireland, Netherlands Scotland.

They further took part in the World T20 but failed to qualify for the next round following defeats in their opening group games against New Zealand and Pakistan.? Bangladesh?s bowling coach, Shane Jurgensen, will be the acting coach for the team?s home series against West Indies.

New Zealand are believed to be in talks with from Sri Lankan spin wizard, Muttiah Muralitharan, to help the team?s spinners as they prepare to battle his former side in the coming week.

Despite recently appointing Shane Bond as their bowling coach, the Black Caps are still concerned over his credentials in helping spinners on the Lankan tracks, which ideally suit spinners. Mike Hesson, their coach, has said that possibility of bringing Murali remains a viable option.

"Obviously Muralitharan lives in Sri Lanka in Colombo and he's someone we've got contacts with," Hesson said."We haven't been able to firm things up but we're also looking into the possibility of another specialist coach.?The Kiwi will play the Lankan Lions in two Tests, five ODIs and solitary T20 from October 30.

Auckland Aces skipper, Gareth Hopkins, said that the team was bitterly disappointed at not making to the semi-finals of the ongoing Champions League T20 after they were beaten by Perth Scorchers in their final group game.

The Aces were in pole position to book their passage to the next round after they had restricted the Scorchers to a gettable 140. However, the batting order failed to rise to the big occasion and was eventually halted on 124.

"But given our position and the belief in the team at the moment, we believed we could make the semis and then the final. We're bitterly disappointed."

Skype 6.0 lands with Microsoft and Facebook account integration, Retina support

You're probably saying to yourself, "didn't Skype just get a Windows 8-friendly refresh?" Why yes, yes it did. But Skype 6.0 here isn't limited to Windows RT slates, instead it's designed for more traditional Windows systems and even has a similarly numbered OS X counter part. There's a number of notable changes here, including the ability to sign in directly with your Facebook or Microsoft account. (If you've got a Live Messenger, Hotmail or Outlook.com account, then you've got a Microsoft account.) The most visible changes, however, will be the "flattened" Don't-call-it-Metro-friendly UI on Windows and the addition of Retina display support on OS X. There's a few other minor changes, including some additional localizations, which you can read about at the source. And heck, since you're already there, might as well download Skype too.

(AP) ? Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said Tuesday when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape, "that's something God intended."

Mourdock, who's been locked in one of the country's most watched Senate races, was asked during the final minutes of a debate with Democratic challenger Rep. Joe Donnelly whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said.

Mourdock became the second GOP Senate candidate to find himself on the defensive over comments about rape and pregnancy. Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin said during a television interview in August that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." Since his comment, Akin has repeatedly apologized but has refused to leave his race despite calls to do so by leaders of his own party, from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on down.

It was not immediately clear what effect Mourdock's comments might have during the final two weeks before the Nov. 6 election. But they could prove problematic. Romney distanced himself from Mourdock on Tuesday night ? a day after a television ad featuring the former Massachusetts governor supporting the GOP Senate candidate began airing in Indiana.

"Gov. Romney disagrees with Richard Mourdock's comments, and they do not reflect his views," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in an email to The Associated Press. Romney aides would not say whether the ad would be pulled and if the Republican presidential nominee would continue to support Mourdock's Senate bid.

Other Republicans did not immediately weigh in. Indiana Republican Party spokesman Pete Seat referred comment to the Mourdock campaign. A spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee and a spokeswoman for Romney did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday night.

National Democrats quickly picked up on Mourdock's statement and used it as an opportunity to paint him as an extreme candidate, calling him a tea party "zealot." DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz described Mourdock's comments as "outrageous and demeaning to woman" and called on Romney to take his pro-Mourdock ad off the air.

Later Tuesday after the debate, Mourdock further explained he did not believe God intended the rape, but that God is the only one who can create life.

"Are you trying to suggest somehow that God preordained rape, no I don't think that," said Mourdock. "Anyone who would suggest that is just sick and twisted. No, that's not even close to what I said."

In response, Donnelly said after the debate in southern Indiana that he doesn't believe "my God, or any God, would intend that to happen.".

Along with Romney's ad, top Republicans have been flocking to Indiana as part of an effort to break open the high-stakes race for the Senate seat, currently held by veteran GOP Sen. Richard Lugar who was defeated by Mourdock in the May primary. Republicans need to gain three seats, or four if President Barack Obama wins re-election, and seats that were predicted to remain or turn Republican have grown uncertain.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell came to Indianapolis for a fundraiser Monday, and Arizona Sen. John McCain and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham campaigned for Mourdock last week. New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte is due in the state Wednesday.

Romney's coattails carry special significance in deeply conservative Indiana, where Mourdock has underperformed Romney by 12 points in most public polls. Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS also has bought another $1 million of airtime in Indiana, making his group the biggest player in Indiana's Senate race. A message left for Crossroads GPS spokesman Nate Hodson was not immediately returned.

Obama, Romney drop the ball on geography, history

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Voters didn't always get the straight goods when President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney made their case for foreign policy and national security leadership Monday night before their last super-sized audience of the campaign. A few of their detours into domestic issues were problematic too.

Romney flubbed Middle East geography. Obama got Romney's record as Massachusetts governor wrong.

At the same time, they injected a little more accuracy into two leading misstatements of the campaign: Romney's claim for months that Obama went around apologizing for America, and the president's assertion, going back to his State of the Union address in January, that the U.S. military's exit from Afghanistan will yield money to rebuild America.

A look at some of their statements and how they compare with the facts:

ROMNEY: "Mr. President, the reason I call it an apology tour is because you went to the Middle East and you flew to Egypt and to Saudi Arabia and to Turkey and Iraq. And by the way, you skipped Israel, our closest friend in the region, but you went to the other nations. And by the way, they noticed that you skipped Israel. And then in those nations, and on Arabic TV, you said that America had been dismissive and derisive. You said that on occasion America had dictated to other nations."

OBAMA: "Nothing Gov. Romney just said is true, starting with this notion of me apologizing. This has been probably the biggest whopper that's been told during the course of this campaign. And every fact checker and every reporter who's looked at it, governor, has said this is not true."

THE FACTS: Romney has indeed repeatedly and wrongly accused the president of traveling the world early in his presidency and apologizing for U.S. behavior. Obama didn't say "sorry" in those travels. But in this debate, Romney at last explained the context of his accusation: not that Obama apologized literally, but that he had been too deferential in his visits to Europe, Latin America and the Muslim world.

Obama said while abroad that the U.S. acted "contrary to our traditions and ideals" in its treatment of terrorist suspects, that "America has too often been selective in its promotion of democracy," that the U.S. "certainly shares blame" for international economic turmoil and has sometimes "shown arrogance and been dismissive, even divisive" toward Europe. Yet he also praised America and its ideals.

___

OBAMA: "What I think the American people recognize is, after a decade of war, it's time to do some nation-building here at home. And what we can now do is free up some resources to, for example, put Americans back to work, especially our veterans, rebuilding our roads, our bridges, our schools."

THE FACTS: If Romney's "apology tour" was a campaign whopper, so has been Obama's repeated claim that ending expensive wars meant the U.S. now has money to spend at home. There is no such peace dividend because the wars were financed largely by borrowing.

Yet Obama, too, watched his words a little more carefully Monday night, with his milder suggestion that "some resources" are freed up. That's a more plausible point, if only because U.S. "resources" include the ability to continue to go deeper in debt, but for the purpose of fixing roads, bridges and the like, instead of for making war.

___

ROMNEY: "Syria is Iran's only ally in the Arab world. It's their route to the sea."

THE FACTS: Iran has a large southern coastline with access to the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. And it has no land border with Syria.

___

ROMNEY: Said that when he was Massachusetts governor, high-school students who graduated in the top quarter "got a four-year, tuition-free ride at any Massachusetts public institution of higher learning."

OBAMA: "That happened before you came into office."

ROMNEY: "That was actually mine, actually, Mr. President. You got that fact wrong."

THE FACTS: Romney was right. The John and Abigail Adams scholarship program began in 2004 when he was governor.

___

ROMNEY: "I said that we would provide guarantees, and that was what was able to allow these (auto) companies to go through bankruptcy, to come out of bankruptcy. Under no circumstance would I do anything other than to help this industry get on its feet. And the idea that has been suggested that I would liquidate the industry. Of course not. That's the height of silliness. I have never said I would liquidate the industry."

OBAMA: "Gov. Romney, you keep on trying to airbrush history here. You were very clear that you would not provide government assistance to the U.S. auto companies, even if they went through bankruptcy. You said that they could get it in the private marketplace. That wasn't true. They would have gone through a liquidation."

THE FACTS: It's true that Romney didn't preach liquidation of GM and Chrysler and that he saw his approach as a way to save the auto companies. But his was an improbable course. Opposing a government bailout, Romney instead favored private loans to finance the automakers' restructuring in bankruptcy court. His proposed government loan guarantees would only have come after the companies went through bankruptcy. At the time, however, both automakers were nearly out of cash and were bad credit risks. The banking system was in crisis and private money wasn't available. So without hefty government aid, the assets of both companies probably would have been sold in liquidation auctions.

___

ROMNEY on SYRIA: "What I'm afraid of is we've watched over the past year or so, first the president saying, 'Well, we'll let the U.N. deal with it.' And Assad ? excuse me, Kofi Annan ? came in and said we're going to try to have a cease-fire. That didn't work. Then it went to the Russians and said, 'Let's see if you can do something.' We should be playing the leadership role there."

OBAMA: "We are playing the leadership role."

THE FACTS: Under Obama, the United States has taken a lead in trying to organize Syria's splintered opposition, even if the U.S. isn't interested in military intervention or providing direct arms support to the rebels. The administration has organized dozens of meetings in Turkey and the Middle East aimed at rallying Syria's political groups and rebel formations to agree on a common vision for a democratic future after Syrian President Bashar Assad is defeated. And Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton brought dozens of nations together as part of the Friends of Syria group to combine aid efforts to Syria's opposition and help it win the support of as many as Syrians as possible. The U.S. also is involved in vetting recipients of military aid from America's Arab allies like Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Romney is partly right in pointing out Obama's failure to win U.N. support for international action in Syria. But the Friends of Syria group has helped bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid and other forms of assistance to Syrian civilians and the political opposition.

___

OBAMA: "What I would not have had done was left 10,000 troops in Iraq that would tie us down. And that certainly would not help us in the Middle East." THE FACTS: Obama was suggesting that he had never favored keeping U.S. troops in Iraq beyond the December 2011 withdrawal deadline that the Bush administration had negotiated with the Iraqi government. Actually, the Obama administration tried for many months to win Iraqi agreement to keeping several thousand American troops there beyond 2011 to continue training and advising the Iraqi armed forces. The talks broke down over a disagreement on legal immunity for U.S. troops.

___

ROMNEY: "We have an enormous trade imbalance with China, and it's worse this year than last year and it's worse last year than the year before."

THE FACTS: That's true as far as it goes but the imbalance is far from unique to the Obama years. The U.S. has run a trade deficit with China since 1985 and the gap has widened nearly every year since. According to Chinese customs data, Beijing reported a $181.3 billion trade surplus with the United States in 2010. That grew to $202.3 billion last year. The surplus for the first nine months of this year was $161.9 billion, well ahead of the level at this point in 2011.

___

OBAMA: "You are familiar with jobs being shipped overseas because you invested in companies that were shipping jobs overseas. And, you know, that's your right. I mean, that's how our free market works."

THE FACTS: Bain Capital, the private equity company that Romney ran from 1984 to 2001, did invest in several companies that shifted American jobs and operations from the U.S. to China and other foreign nations. In one instance in 1998, Bain bought a 10 percent investment stake in Global-Tech, a Hong Kong firm that used mainland Chinese factories to make toasters and other appliances for U.S. manufacturers that were phasing out American operations and jobs. Romney held full Bain partnership stakes in that deal before the firm sold its holding later that year. Bain also invested in several firms that outsourced to Mexico in the early 2000s, but by then Romney had begun shifting away from Bain to a role running the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. And in almost all of these cases, it remains unclear how much oversight Bain had in the overseas shifts. The Romney campaign has said that Romney's holdings were mostly passive in nature, particularly after he left the firm.

___

ROMNEY: "In the 2000 debates, there was no mention of terrorism."

THE FACTS: There was passing mention of terrorism in the 2000 debates. In the Oct. 17, 2000, debate between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush, Gore talked about his work in Congress to "deal with the problems of terrorism and these new weapons of mass destruction." And in the vice presidential debate, Democrat Joe Lieberman defended the Clinton administration's record of preparing the armed forces to "meet the threats of the new generation of tomorrow, of weapons of mass destruction, of ballistic missiles, terrorism, cyber warfare." Romney's larger point, that the U.S. did not anticipate anything on the scale of terrorist threat that existed, is supported by the light attention paid to the subject in the debates.

1) Be Picky, But Not All At Once: There are a lot of baby products available and it can be easy to get caught up in feeling like you need all of it. To stick to your baby budget, buy only the large items you need (like a safe car seat) and start purchasing when you?re pregnant. If you space out the big purchases, you won?t notice such a huge hit to your budget.

2) Start While You?re Pregnant: Don?t wait to stock up on baby items like diapers for when the baby arrives, start early. Each week buy a pack of diapers (if you?re using disposable) or a reusable diaper and continue to do so for each week. Alternatively, you could purchase a $10 gift card for yourself each week to a large department store. That way, when baby arrives you will have 36-40 weeks worth of savings to use up.

3) Cut Back at Home: If you are looking for ways to increase your baby budget, look at cutting back on some of the extras in the house. If you have the highest cable package or have a home phone on top of cell phones, look at shaving some of those expenses off the house budget. Cut back on lunches and dinners out and opt for shopping grocery sales and you?ll be surprised by how much you could save.

4) Test Drive Single Income: If you will be taking maternity leave, test drive what it will be like to live on a smaller monthly income. Doing so will help you manage easier when the baby comes and you won?t be hit with two life changes at once!

5) Coupons & Samples: Start collecting coupons and samples early. If you will be using disposable diapers, many hospitals give out samples and coupons can be found year round. Ask friends and co-workers to keep you in mind if they come across any baby-related coupons they won?t be using.

6) Lean on Friends: It?s amazing how much you can save for your baby budget when you lean on friends and family to help out. Ask around if anyone has a baby swing or baby clothes they?d be willing to let you borrow. Hand-me-downs are no big thing when it comes to newborn babies because they go so quickly often they?re only worn once or twice.
