As year-end sales figures trickle in, it looks like 2012 was a strong year for the U.S. automaker. General Motors reports sales of over 1 million vehicles with 30 mpg or more, and Ford moved more than 2 million cars. But the best 2012 might have been at the Chrysler Group, which saw a 21 percent boost in 2012, selling 1.6 million vehicles by Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram.
Every brand, save one, posted double-digit gains in North American sales over the last 12 months. The outlier was Fiat, which posted a triple-digit gain. Whether it was firing their U.S. chief, bringing in Charlie Sheen, or tuning the 500 Abarth (pictured above) for the U.S. market, something must have struck a chord with consumers. The company saw a 120 percent jump in Fiat 500 sales compared to last year?especially good news since Fiat is currently pulling a Mini (or Prius) and expanding the 500 lineup.
Chrysler's good news for 2012 doesn't even include the company's halo car, the 2013 SRT Viper, which has yet to make its first deliveries. That didn't stop Dodge from selling 20 older fourth-generation Vipers?down from the 196 sold in 2011. Apparently some people just can't wait.
