Google has invested in a wind farm in the Texas Panhandle.?
Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) has caught the wind energy bug. The California-based technology giant recently said it made a $200 million investment in a west Texas wind farm.
The Silicon Valley Business Journal reports that Google has invested in the Spinning Spur Wind Project in Oldham County in the Texas Panhandle. The project is designed to generate enough power for 60,000 homes.
Google could be interested in using renewable resources to power its growing number of data centers, the Silicon Valley Business Journal reports. The company already has previously invested other renewable projects, such as another wind farm in Oregon and solar installations.
However, it makes sense that Google would want to invest in Texas, which is the top produce of wind energy in the country, according to a report from NPR?s StateImpact Texas.
U.S. Congress has also extended wind tax credits that were set to expire at the end of 2012, NPR reports. Before the tax credits were renewed, many Houston wind energy businesses expressed concern about their future. Some, such as EDP Renewables North America LLC, even laid off employees.
