Lutheran General Children's Hospital educates schools about ...

Tuesday, October 4. Lutheran General Children?s Hospital is hosting a Panel Discussion where experts in the field, including school attorneys, an America Diabetes Associate member, an Illinois Association of School Nurses representative, and medical experts specializing in diabetes care, are coming together discussion how to best implement the requirements of the Care of Students with Diabetes Act. Fifty school districts scheduled to attend the Panel Discussion.

Advocate Lutheran General Children?s Hospital and Advocate Medical Group have partnered to assist parents in advocating for their children as well as equipping areas public schools with the tools to comply with the new legislation.

To do this they have undertaken two major initiatives.

The first initiative is to send Diabetes educators into public schools. These educators are helping to inform school staff about diabetes. This includes explaining what diabetes is as well eliminating common misconceptions about diabetes. Not all schools have a school nurse, and school nurses are not always available which is why it is so important for other staff members to be knowledgeable about diabetes.

?School staff sometimes say, ?My grandma has diabetes, I know what it is,??? said Kathleen Muglia, CPNP ND CDE. ?The problem is that children with diabetes are very different than the elderly with diabetes, especially when the elderly typically have Type 2 and most children have Type 1. Type 1 and Type 2 are two entirely different diseases.?

In addition, diabetes educators are also able to provide training to Diabetes Care Aids. This training teaches them how to manage diabetes as well as how to use glucagon, administer of insulin, and check blood sugar.

Children with diabetes are often not allowed on field trips, not allowed to eat snacks at class parties or allowed to join sports teams because school staff is not knowledgeable about the appropriate ways to manage diabetes. As a result of this discrimination, Illinois passed The Care of Students with Diabetes Act in January 2011. This law is designed to ensure that all students with diabetes have access to the same educational opportunities and other activities as other students.

This law requires that all schools that have at least one diabetic student implement the following changes:
? All school staff needs to be educated about the care of students with diabetes
? One staff member must be trained as a Diabetes Care Aid who can help students check blood sugar, give insulin, and use a Glucagon
? Children with diabetes are allowed to care for their diabetes in the classroom.

Currently schools have been told to implement the new law but they do not know what this entails because there is a lot of confusion and misinformation. By holding this discussion, Lutheran General hopes to give school staff a better sense of what changes they need to make as well as provide experts to offer suggestions for best ways to make these changes. Each panel member has a unique perspective on the new law and will be invited to share their ideas.

Topics to be discussed during the October 4 Panel Discussion include:
? How to best serve the health and educational needs of students with diabetes in the school setting
? How to address the requirements of the Illinois Diabetes Care Act for Children and recent legislative changes
? How to develop 504 plans and emergency health plans for students with diabetes.
