Taylor Anderson loved Japan.

A year after she was killed in the horrific Japanese earthquake and tsunami, that love continues to spread.

On Sunday, about 650 peopled packed an auditorium at Randolph-Macon College for a program that commemorated the Japanese disaster that killed more than 15,000 people.

Anderson, 24, whose parents live in Midlothian, graduated from R-MC in 2008 and taught in Ishinomaki in northeastern Japan.

"She wanted to be a bridge between the two people, and that's what she did," said Ichiro Fujisaki, Japan's ambassador to the U.S.

The program, the Taylor Anderson/Japan Foundation Lecture, was called, ?Postscripts from Japan: Stories that Endure after the Earthquake and Tsunami."

The main speaker, National Public Radio correspondent Yuki Noguchi, said she was touched by the resilience, bravery and good humor of Japanese people she met as she covered the disaster.

"No one considered themselves a victim," she said.

The program was put on with part of a $100,000 grant, honoring Anderson, that R-MC received from The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.

The grant will help the college increase course offerings in Japanese language and culture and allow students to travel to Japan as part of their studies.

The overriding story of Sunday's program was that of Anderson. She was the first confirmed American death from the earthquake and tsunami. Soon after, Monty Dickson, an Anchorage man also teaching in Japan, was added to the list.

"Mr. Dickson & Ms. Anderson?s deaths were the only (American citizen) casualties we were able to confirm," a State Department spokesman said in an email.

Before the lecture, Anderson's parents, Andy and Jeanne Anderson, said a fund in her name will help Japanese orphans and others for years to come.

"The fact that her memory can help us do a lot of good over there has been very satisfying,? her father said.
