Property Management Companies ? Emergency Management
Property Management Companies ? UCLA Extension today announced the offering of a certificate in homeland security and emergency management to meet projected demands for one of the fastest growing job sectors in the U.S. and California.
Trained emergency management professionals are needed at major corporations, universities, hospitals, public agencies, financial institutions, real estate property management companies and more, officials said. When classes begin April 3, UCLA Extension will become one of the first continuing higher education institutions on the West Coast to offer a certificate for professionals in management and supervisory positions. Registration for classes is now open.
?The focus on security, protection, and emergency response has become greater ? not just from a heightened concern for terrorist activities, but also from the severity of natural disasters on major population centers,? said Roger Torneden, director of Business, Management and Legal Programs at UCLA Extension. ?Sadly, many companies and some public agencies are not sufficiently prepared for risk mitigation and avoidance, for minimizing the loss of life and assets due to severe accidents or catastrophes or how to maintain and recover operations immediately following a disaster.?
Details of the new certificate program will be discussed during UCLA Extension?s downtown Los Angeles open house on Tuesday, March 20, at its Figueroa Courtyard facilities, 261 S. Figueroa St. The open house begins at 5:30 p.m. and will highlight many other Extension certificate programs. Attendees are encouraged to register to reserve a seat at one of the many workshops. Employment in this sector is expected to surge. For example, homeland security represents the fastest growing federal government job segment with 42 percent job growth rate projected to 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor. The employment growth rate for emergency management specialists in the private sector is projected at 22 percent through 2016. California has some of the highest employment levels for emergency management directors in the country with a mean salary of $87,020.
?Recent events ? from a natural gas pipeline rupture in California to a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan ? demonstrate the need for preparation and planning,? Torneden said. ?In addition, we have a large number of military personnel looking to transition into private sector jobs ? and earning a certificate like this could be logical career choice.?
The new certificate program is being guided by an advisory group consisting of senior executives, legal experts and security professionals from a cross section of well-known public agencies, corporations, institutions and consultants to the federal government. These include the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Agency, Northrop Grumman, Disney and the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.
?No organization today is immune from experiencing a high impact crisis ? prompted by an attack or natural disaster,? said Elsa Lee, an advisory group member and CEO and founder of Advantage SCO, LLC, a consultant firm that has worked closely with the FBI, CIA and other agencies. ?One can choose to be proactive and invest in preparedness and mitigation up front or suffer insurmountable losses in lives and dollars in ?reactive mode?.?
The certificate program will continue to expand its class offerings and feature many nationally known experts, such as Scott R. Norwood, emergency and homeland security preparedness manager for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
