The Director, Media and Community Relations develops and directs a comprehensive communications program to effectively reach, educate and motivate key stakeholders and raise United Way?s positive visibility in the community. ?The Director will utilize well-develop strategic and tactical approaches to deliver high-quality content and high-impact communications across all vehicles.

The Director will utilize a deep knowledge about the social and policy issues facing Illinois and U.S. on matters of education, income and health, and United Way?s work in these areas, to create compelling communications.

The Director is responsible for leading and/or supporting the planning, development and distribution of a variety of communications tools in collaboration with the other marketing functional areas including:

  • earned news media
  • social/online media
  • paid-advertising
  • printed mail campaigns
  • email campaigns
  • printed collateral
  • executive speeches
  • events
  • web-based meetings
  • website

External and Internal Communication Strategy and Executive:

  • Develops and executes a comprehensive outreach plan for year round earned communications with traditional and social media and the community that demonstrates our leadership role, supports our mission and engages volunteers, donors and activists.? Target audience includes:
      • Traditional news media (including general news outlets, policy-focused media, Chicago business-focused media, philanthropy-focused media and Education/Income/Health-related media).
      • Social and other digital media
      • United Way volunteers
      • United Way corporate partners
      • Key business groups
      • Other relevant key influencers in the community
      • General public
  • Serves as primary media spokesperson on day-to-day operations, developing interview approaches and strategies to ensure factual dissemination of issues, the campaign, major efforts and programs; and coaches other spokesperson for media relations.
  • Cultivates and strengthens United Way?s relationships with media professional and community leaders. Builds media contact lists and other databases including print and electronic media, TV/Radio, and comminity groups.
  • Develops a comprehensive understanding of the policy issues facing Illinois and the U.S. on matters of education, income and health and works closely with the Director of Advocacy to mobilize our resources in support of our advocacy efforts.
  • Advises key leadership of public relations issues and develops appropriate strategies and responses doe disseminating information.
  • Develops and executes a comprehensive marketing communications/messaging training programs for employees.
  • Coordinates media outreach efforts for Member United Ways.
  • Measures and reports on publicity values.
  • Proactively advises and assists other departments on projects to maximize United Way?s visibility and image in the community.

Content Development:

  • Produces effective communication (copy) including, but not limited to, speeches, press advisories, news releases, public service announcements, position papers, fact sheets, press kits, letters to the editor and Op Eds, statements and talking points, blog/web content, employee communications, marketing collateral advertising copy.
  • Provides support as needed on key internal communications to staff and volunteers.
  • Oversees and coordinators all United Way external publications, including the annual report and e-newsletters.

Issue and Satff Management:

  • Recruits, trains, and supervisors communications/public relations staff and volunteers.
  • Develops and manages related budgets.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor?s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related degree.
  • Minimum 5-10 years experience with a Public Relations Firm preferred or worked directly with a media oriented department
  • Managerial experience with proven ability to motivate and coach direct reports and develop skills base.
  • Exceptional written skills, ability to clearly and concisely capture key messages to variety of audiences and across all forms of written communications, including speeches, press releases, blog posts, white papers, op-eds, internal.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Must have stellar proofreading editing skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of digital and social media channels strategy.
  • Can effectively work with a broad range of individuals and groups and external to United Way including executive volunteers.
  • Experienced management of budgets and contracts.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a high pressure environment and respond quickly to deadlines.
  • The ability to manage highly-sensitive organization information with discretion.
  • Fully proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Internet.
