Windows chief leaves Microsoftby Stephanie Boyd

Within weeks of launching Windows 8, and only days after introducing its Surface tablet, Microsoft has announced it is parting ways with Steven Sinofsky, the head of its Windows division

REDMONT, WA -- Steven Sinofsky, the head of Microsoft's flagship Windows division, has left the company. His departure, for which Microsoft gave no reason, comes just weeks after the software giant launched its Windows 8 operating system, seen by many as key to the firm's future.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer commented on Sinofsky's departure after 23 years with the company with a degree of diplomacy.

?I am grateful for the many years of work that Steven has contributed to the company,? Ballmer said in a company statement released on Monday evening. ?The products and services we have delivered to the market in the past few months mark the launch of a new era at Microsoft.?

Insiders attributed Sinofsky's seemingly sudden departure to concerns over Sinofsky?s ability to get along with other executives, including Steve Ballmer.

Commenting on his exit, Sinofsky said: ?It is impossible to count the blessings I have received over my years at Microsoft."

Microsoft confirmed Julie Larson-Green is being promoted to lead all Windows software and hardware engineering. Larson-Green worked on the user experience of early versions of Internet Explorer, as well as the revamped user interface Microsoft Office. She also played significant roles in Windows 7 and Windows 8 releases, responsible for program management, user interface design and research.

The executive management change comes at a critical time for Microsoft, whose future greatly depends on the success of Windows 8. CEO Ballmer recently described initial sales of Windows 8 PCs and Surface tablets as "modest". This may change, however, as the software giant is looking to promote the new operating system with a $1-billion marketing campaign.
