The Samsung 20mm NX Pancake Lens ($349.99) is a compact prime lens for the NX camera system. It is incredibly small, as its pancake designation would suggest, but manages to deliver a wide-angle 30mm field of view in terms of full-frame photography. The lens isn't as sharp or fast as the wider Samsung 16mm f/2.4 Ultra Wide Pancake NX Lens ?or our Editors' Choice, the Samsung 30mm NX Pancake Lens .
One of the best features of Samsung NX lenses is the iFn button, which lets you use the lens's focus ring to adjust shooting settings. There is no lens hood included, but 43mm filters and screw-in hoods are supported. This is the same filter size that is used in the 16mm and 30mm NX pancake lenses, so you can share filters between the three.
I used Imatest to check the sharpness and distortion characteristics of the lens when paired with the 20-megapixel NX20. At f/2.8 it is quite soft, hitting only 1,541 lines per picture height?well below the 1,800 lines required for a sharp image. Stopping down to f/4 improves performance dramatically, increasing the resolution to 1,894 lines. It peaks at f/5.6, recording 2,347 lines there. Distortion is a minimal 0.1 percent thanks to in-camera correction.
If you're looking for a wide-angle prime lens for an NX camera, the 20mm NX Pancake Lens is one of two options. It isn't quite as wide or fast as the 16mm f/2.4, which is priced the same, but that lens features a very wide perspective that can be difficult to use effectively. If you're primarily a wide-angle shooter and prefer a prime lens it will get the job done, but it isn't as sharp as the small 20-50mm f/3.5-5.6 ED II NX Lens . That lens is only a half stop slower at 20mm, is quite small for a zoom, and is $100 less expensive.
