Options in Caring for the Elderly

Many of us with our own families and responsibilities are worried about how to meet the need for the care of a loved one. As the baby boomer generation ages, the options extend beyond traditional nursing home care. The choices available may range from adult day care facilities to senior home care. With an annual cost averaging $40,000-$100,000 annually, a nursing home facility is one of the more expensive options available. You will most likely want to consider this as a last resort, unless the specific needs of your loved one requires a residential facility with specialized training and medical care. If the medical needs of your loved one aren't as complicated, an assisted living care facility is a more economical option. Generally ranging from $25,000-$45,000 a year, an assisted living facility is for those individuals that still maintain a reasonable amount of mobility. Additionally, these facilities are geared for those that also have a reasonable degree of their mental capacities. If you desire to keep your loved one in the comfort of their home, In-home senior care is a third option. The costs for this type of care can widely vary. In-home senior care could cost anywhere from $20,000-$100,000 a year. The costs will be based on the individual requirements needed by your loved one. It could be general assistance or around the clock medical care. Adult day care is the most economical with costs generally ranging from $10,000-$20,000. Obviously, this type of care doesn't involve as much skilled nursing as required with many of the other options. If you care for your loved one in the evenings, this option is a consideration for their daytime needs while you work. It provides your loved one with companionship and activities that keep their minds active and engaged. To determine the right care for your loved one, make a list of your loved ones needs. Write down the pros and cons involved with each type of care. Talk with your family Doctor and seek his input based on the specific needs of your family member. Once you narrowed down the type of service needed, you can begin to investigate the different providers in your area. You obviously want to make sure you receive the best care, but keep in mind that costs will vary from facility to facility. A higher cost doesn't always mean a higher level of care. Always take the time to interview those that will be taking care of your senior. With options ranging from adult day care to senior home care, there are multiple ways to ensure your loved one receives the best care for their specific needs. It is a difficult time when the tables are turned and you must begin to care for the mother or father that has always provided for you. Take a little time to investigate all your options before making a final decision.
